WESTON, Mass. - The fourth-seeded Regis (Mass.) women's basketball team was held to just three points in the fourth quarter on Tuesday evening and #5 Albertus Magnus took advantage to stun the Pride 51-49 in the quarterfinals of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Tournament at Higgins Court.
With the loss, the Pride's 2017-18 season comes to a close with an overall record of 15-11. Albertus Magnus moves to 18-7 and advances to play top-seeded Saint Joseph's (Me.) in the GNAC Semifinals on Thursday evening.
The Pride went into the fourth quarter ahead by a score of 46-41, but both defenses went into full lockdown mode from there on in. Senior Brittany Stone (West Bridgewater, Mass.) put home a lay-in with 8:34 remaining in the period to put the Pride ahead by seven, but from there the offense would go cold. Albertus Magnus senior Olivia Bolden (South Windsor, Conn.) would score the next five points for the Falcons to cut the deficit to two, before Angelina Piccirillo (Naugatuck, Conn.) knotted the score with a pair of free throws with 3:07 left.
The score was still 48-48 when Sam D'Angelo (Woburn, Mass.) put home one of two free throws with 1:10 remaining to put the Pride up by one, but Kiki Epps (Norwalk, Conn.) responded at the other end of the floor by hitting two free throws of her own to put the Falcons ahead for good.
The Pride got two chances to tie or win, but couldn't snap out of the funk that saw them score just one basket in the fourth quarter. After Bolden missed a pair of free throws and her team ahead by two and five seconds remaining, a half-court heave from Melissa Rogers(Billerica, Mass.) hit the rim and bounced out, giving the Falcons the stunning victory. The Pride shot just 1-for-12 from the floor in the fourth quarter and 1-for-6 from the free throw line.
Bolden was the game's leading scorer on the evening with 20 points, followed by Stone, who put in 17. Both Stone (11 rebounds) and D'Angelo (11 points, 11 rebounds) finished with double-doubles for Regis.
