GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- The Gwynedd Mercy University Women's Basketball team closed out the regular season with a 78-48 victory over Centenary University on Saturday afternoon on Senior Day.
Prior to the contest, the Griffins honored their four seniors: Bianca Adams, Julianna Hoisington, Larissa Leyes and Alison Szyszko along with their families.
Gwynedd Mercy, who clinched the #2 playoff seed, will host a CSAC Semifinal game here on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
Adams led GMercyU (17-8, 14-2 CSAC) with a team-high 16 points while junior Susan Bossler added 11 as the Griffins used a 14-1 run to open the final quarter to go on to win their fifth game in a row.
The Griffins jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first when Leyes connected the first of her two three pointers. An Olivia Roseman fast-break layup off a steal would stretch the lead to eleven (16-5) with just over three minutes remaining. Adams would close out the scoring with a three ball of her own to give Gwynedd a 19-9 edge after the first ten minutes of action.
Leyes hit from downtown again just over midway through the second period to keep the Griffins ahead 27-15. The Griffins would keep their lead at twelve (33-21) with a Roseman layup just before the half.
A Bossler triple at the 5:24 mark in the third period would stretch the Gwynedd lead to twenty (43-23). Roseman would give the Griffins their largest lead of the stanza (48-23) after she connected on a pair of free throws with just under four minutes remaining to cap the 15-2 run. After Sydney Thompson's layup for a 50-26 lead with 2:03 remaining, Centenary put a 10-2 run together to cut into the lead, but a Hoisington jumper with six seconds remaining kept Gwynedd ahead 52-36 heading into the final period.
The fourth quarter saw the Griffins outscore the Cyclones, 26-12, en route to the 30-point win.
Roseman along with Leyes registered six points apiece. Szyszko and Hoisington kicked in eight each.
Rachel Edwards led Centenary (11-14, 9-7 CSAC) with 21 points and 10 rebounds.
The Griffins held the Cyclones to (22.4%) shooting while forcing 19 team turnovers. Gwynedd shot (34.9%) on the offensive end of the floor but made the most of their free throw attempts hitting a season-high 25.
GMercyU also held the glass out-rebounding Centenary 51-41. Chyanne Fine led the Griffins with 10 total.
In first round action on Monday, #3 Neumann will host #6 Rosemont while #4 Marywood takes on the fifth-seeded Cyclones. #1 Cabrini and #2 Gwynedd will await the winners in semifinal on Wednesday.
