DOYLESTOWN (PA) – The Delaware Valley University women's basketball team ended its 2017-18 season with a 75-45 loss to Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom foe DeSales University.

 

The Aggies, with no seniors on their roster, finished 7-18 overall and 4-10 in the league. Meanwhile, DeSales' win, combined with King's College's home loss to FDU-Florham, gives the Bulldogs (15-10, 10-4) a home game against King's in the conference semifinals on Wednesday, February 21.

 

DeSales scored the game's first 13 points – eight by Bridget Walsh and five from Morgan Birmelin – and finished the opening quarter with a 15-3 advantage. The Bulldogs got a trey to open the second quarter and they were still up 15, 23-8, with 5:35 to go before halftime. DelVal responded with an 8-0 run thanks to five straight points from Danielle Skedzielewski and a 3-pointer from Sarah Wills to make it a seven-point contest. The Aggies got their deficit down to six late in the half before a pair of free throws by Birmelin in the closing seconds made the score 30-22.

 

In the third quarter, Morgan Mitchell sank a pair of free throws with 5:54 on the clock to get DelVal to within five, 34-29. However, three different players scored for DeSales as part of 7-0 run to bump the lead back up to 12. The Bulldogs eventually took a 45-36 advantage into the fourth.

 

The final quarter was all DeSales as it outscored the Aggies, 30-9. The Bulldogs hit 13 of their 18 shots (72.2 percent) from the field in those 10 minutes while DelVal was 3-for-14 (21.4 percent).

 

Birmelin had 14 of her game-high 29 points in the fourth. She finished the afternoon 12-for-18 from the field, including 3-for-4 from beyond the arc. Birmelin added five rebounds, five assists and four steals. Walsh had 15 points and 11 boards while Leandra Sterner added 10 points and seven assists.

 

For the Aggies, Skedzielewski just missed out on a double-double as she notched 22 points and nine rebounds. Mitchell had six points while Ashley Smink's line included six points, six rebounds, four steals and three assists. Amber Grohowski led the way on the board with 11, including five on the offensive end.
