PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College women's basketball team continued to roll on Tuesday as the Cardinals extended their winning streak to 12 games after dispatching Elmira, 60-53, in an Empire 8 bout inside Manning and Napier Varsity Gymnasium on Bobby Wanzer Court. Fisher, which has now won 16 of its last 17 games, improved to 19-5 overall and 14-1 in the conference while the Soaring Eagles fell to 13-10 and 5-9, respectively.
It was all Fisher to start the game as the Cardinals opened up a sizeable lead after reeling off 10 unanswered points including three apiece from Sydney Masna and Olivia Baumann to hold a 20-4 lead.
Elmira, however, recovered in the second period after outscoring Fisher 15-11 over 10 minutes to cut the deficit to eight points before a pair of free throws from Baumann staked the Cardinals to a double-digit cushion at the conclusion of the first half of play.
In the third period, the Soaring Eagles scored five quick points in the opening 36 seconds to pull to within five points, 31-26, but an 8-1 response from Fisher highlighted by four points from Masna allowed Fisher to regain control with a 12-point lead, 39-27. As the half continued, the two team traded baskets down the stretch until Elmira found a groove and closed out the stanza by nailing four of its final five shot attempts to produce an 8-2 run and bring it to 45-40 leading into the final quarter.
After a layup from Meghan Lescinskas pushed the Cardinals' margin back to seven points, the home team saw its lead evaporate as Elmira scored the game's next seven points to knot things up at 47-47 with just under seven minutes left to play. After swapping baskets over the next minute, the Cardinals reclaimed the lead with a pair of free throws from Masna and would go on to orchestrate an 8-0 run over the next 1:43 to stretch the advantage back to eight points with time running out. The visitors would climb to within six points on their next possession, but that was as close as they would come as the Cardinals locked down their 14th win in Empire 8 action.
Masna matched her career high in the win with 14 points to go along with eight rebounds, three steals and a pair of assists while Caroline Robertson added 14 points of her own and nine boards. Erin Hulbert finished with 10 points and four rebounds while Nicole Robinson contributed eight points, seven rebounds, four steals and two blocked shots overall.
Fisher was efficient from the floor as the team combined to shoot nearly 48 percent for the game (21-for-44). Fisher also took advantage of its free throw opportunities as it sank 15-of-18 overall.
The Cardinals will look for their 13th consecutive win as they close out the regular season at 4 p.m. on Saturday in Troy, N.Y. against The Sage Colleges.
