ST. DAVIDS (PA) – Eastern University rallied from a 20-point, first-half deficit and celebrated its Senior Night with a 59-52, Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom victory over Delaware Valley University.
It was a tale of two halves with the Aggies (7-17, 4-9) dominating the opening 20 minutes. They held the Eagles (5-19, 2-11) to just three field goals in each of the first two quarters while connecting on a combined 12 field goals of their own.
DelVal was up 7-6 with 5:37 left in the opening quarter when it held Eastern scoreless the rest of the way. Meanwhile, four points by Amber Grohowski, two by Danielle Skedzielewski and one by Lauren Moretti gave the Aggies a 14-6 at the end of the period.
DelVal then began the second quarter with a 14-2 run to build its advantage to 20, 28-8, with 4:18 remaining. Five different players scored during the spurt, including four from Morgan Mitchell. Eastern got the remaining two buckets of the half, but trailed by 16 at the break.
Then came the third quarter with the Eagles hitting nine shots from the field and outscoring the Aggies, 21-9, over the 10 minutes to make it a 37-33 contest. Eastern scored nine of the first 12 points of the fourth to take it first lead since the game's opening basket.
The Eagles eventually built their lead to five, 50-45, with 3:47 to go. DelVal rallied with a three-point play by Ashley Smink and a pair of free throws by Skedzielewski to tie the contest. However, Eastern responded with six straight points and nine of 11 for the 59-52 victory.
Amanda Riff led the Eagles with 12 points while Taylor Price had 11 points, nine assists and seven rebounds.
For the Aggies, Skedzielewski led the way with 15 points. Grohowski was a perfect 6-for-6 from the field and had 12 points and nine boards. Smink added 11 points and four steals while Morgan Mitchell contributed six points and six assists.
DelVal will wrap up its season on Saturday, February 17 (1 p.m.) when it hosts DeSales University.
