Gibbons Breaks Rebounding Record as Bullets Grab Top Spot

CARLISLE, Pa.  Senior Emily Gibbons (Annapolis, Md./Severn School) took over as the all-time leader in rebounds and Gettysburg College seized the top spot in the Centennial Conference standings with a 69-55 victory at Dickinson College Tuesday night.
 
Gettysburg (19-2, 15-1 CC) grabbed the pole position in the conference with the win and No. 14/16 Muhlenberg College's (20-2, 15-2 CC) loss at Haverford College (18-4, 14-3 CC). The Bullets host the Mules Thursday at 7 p.m. The Orange and Blue handed Muhlenberg its only other loss 67-62 on Jan. 11.
 
Gibbons broke the program's career record with her first board early in the first quarter which pushed her past Jennifer Bengel '06. For a bonus, the senior forward passed men's all-time leader Del Warfel '59 late in the fourth quarter and finished the night with 940 career rebounds. Gibbons also scored nine points.
 
Junior Emma Dorshimer (Jenkintown, Pa./Jenkintown) and sophomore Ashley Gehrin (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) scored all but two of Gettysburg's 32 second-half points. Dorshimer poured in 18 of her game-high 25 in the final 20 minutes, while Gehrin posted 12 of her 19 in the second half.
 
Lauren McBride paced Dickinson (8-14, 8-9 CC) with 16 points. Kassidy Lesher added 11 points and 11 rebounds and Emily Padalino produced 13 points off the bench.
 
Gettysburg was well-balanced in the opening half as nine players reached the scoring column. Dickinson took an 11-8 advantage in the first quarter, but the Bullets ended the period on a 9-2 run to seize a 17-13 lead.
 
The Red Devils kept it close with a pair of free throws by Lesher to start the second quarter, but the visitors poured in a 9-0 run with a lay-up by Gehrin making it 26-15 with 6:50 to go in the half. The margin stood at nine before a lay-up and three-pointer by Dorshimer gave Gettysburg a 37-23 advantage at halftime.
 
The Bullets maintained the double-figure lead throughout the third and went ahead by as many as 19 twice. Dickinson steadily chipped away at the lead and pulled to eight twice in the fourth quarter, the last following a three-pointer by Emily Padalino which made it 59-51 with 3:05 to play.
 
On Gettysburg's very next possession, Dorshimer lost her defender at the top of the key and stroked a three-pointer to push the margin back to double-figures. Dickinson would get no closer than nine in the final minutes as Gehrin and Dorshimer combined to make 7-of-10 free throws over the final 1:30.
 
Gettysburg finished 24-of-55 (43.6 percent) from the field, while Dickinson hit 22-of-49 (44.9 percent) of its shots. The Bullets tied their season low with just eight turnovers, marking the fourth game in a row the team posted less than 10.
