William Paterson Women’s Basketball Cruises to 60-46 Victory Against Rutgers-Newark

WAYNE, N.J. – Senior forward Tori Woetzel collected her 11th career double-double and junior guard Julie Rovito added 17 points as the William Paterson women's basketball team (12-10, 9-6 NJAC) cruised to a 60-46 home victory against Rutgers-Newark (7-15, 2-13 NJAC) Feb. 3.

 

With three regular-season games remaining, the Pioneers remain tied with Rowan (9-6 NJAC) for fifth place in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) standings. The top six teams qualify for the NJAC Tournament that begins with first-round games Saturday, Feb. 17.

 

WP opened up a 22-6 edge by the end of the first quarter, and a 37-18 advantage by halftime, thanks to 16-for-34 (.471) shooting during the game's first 20 minutes. The Pioneers stretched their lead to as many as 25 (45-20, 6:14 in the third) during the second half for their wire-to-wire victory.

 

Woetzel finished with 11 tallies, three assists and a game-best 13 rebounds. Rovito chipped in four steals, and freshman forward Vianca Soriano pulled down seven rebounds.

 

Junior guard Faith Ashby led the Scarlet Raiders with 20 points and three steals, while senior forward Nicole Skelly added 10 tallies and 11 rebounds.

 

The Pioneers celebrated #Play4Kay Day, raising breast cancer awareness and research funds, and also honored members of the University's seven women's intercollegiate athletics teams at halftime as part of National Girls and Women in Sports Day.

 

William Paterson will travel to Ewing for a 6:00 p.m. contest against second-place The College of New Jersey Wednesday, Feb. 7.
