McHugh and Vitucci 3-Point Shooting Leads Cortland Women Past Plattsburgh

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - Kerry McHugh (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) and Kristy Vitucci (Deer Park) combined for 39 points and all 12 of Cortland's 3-pointers as the Red Dragons defeated host Plattsburgh, 75-60, in a SUNYAC women's basketball contest.

McHugh scored 21 points, dished out four assists and grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds. She made 7-of-14 shots from 3-point range. Vitucci went 5-of-9 from the 3-point arc and ended with 18 points and eight rebounds.

Shana Crespo (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) added 12 points and Justine Crespo (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) totaled 11 points and tied her career high with 13 rebounds. Taylor Miller (Freeport) scored six points and led the Red Dragons (13-8, 10-4 SUNYAC) with five assists.

Taylor Durnin led Plattsburgh (7-15, 5-10 SUNYAC) with 21 points, nine rebounds and three assists. Mary McKenna ended with nine points and nine rebounds, Anna Thompson registered seven points, five rebounds and three steals, and Taylor Clare added eight rebounds and three assists.

Cortland led 18-17 after a tightly contested first quarter, and Plattsburgh was up 30-29 on a Brooke Benna 3-pointer with 2:56 left in the first half. The Red Dragons closed the half on a 6-0 run on two McHugh 3-pointers - one with 2:34 remaining and the other with less than 10 seconds left - to take a 35-30 halftime lead.

Cortland continued its run to start the third quarter with the period's first six points - four by (Shana) Crespo, to push the lead to 41-30. Plattsburgh got back to within seven with six minutes left in the third, but Vitucci's 3-pointer and (Justine) Crespo's layup made it a 12-point game. Cortland led by as many as 15 in the third and took a 58-48 lead into the final 10 minutes.

Plattsburgh made a final push and got as close as six at 62-56 on two Durnin free throws with 7:09 left. Katie Carey (Greene) hit a layup at the 6:26 mark, followed by a McHugh 3-pointer with 4:53 left, to extend the lead to 11, and Cortland led by at least nine from that point. McHugh scored all 21 of her points in the second and fourth quarters - nine in the second and 12 in the fourth.

Cortland, which is a three-way tie for second place in the SUNYAC standings with New Paltz and Oneonta, will play its final four regular-season league games at home. The Red Dragons will host Fredonia Friday at 5:30 p.m. and Buffalo State Saturday at 1 p.m.
