Nazareth holds off Hartwick, 56-52

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Sophomore Demetria Woodard hit the go-ahead basket – a three-pointer – with :28 left Friday to lift host Nazareth to a 56-52 women's basketball victory over Hartwick in Empire 8 Conference action.

The victory was the fourth straight for the Golden Flyers, who improved to 11-9 overall and 7-4 in E8 action. Hartwick dropped to 5-14 overall and 4-6 in conference play. The Golden Flyers host Stevens Saturday at 4 p.m. with a two-game lead over the Ducks for fourth place in the conference standings. Stevens fell to St. John Fisher Friday.

Woodard scored just six points in the game – all coming on a pair of clutch three-pointers in the final 1:25 of the game. Nazareth trailed 52-50 following a free throws by Hartwick's Kelly Pine with :35 left. After a timeout, Nazareth was able to get the ball to the right corner, where Woodard calmly buried the go-ahead shot to put the Golden Flyers up 53-52.

Hartwick turned the ball over on the ensuing possession, then Lizzie Straub followed with a pair of free throws with :11 left and Isabella Gjonaj added another in the closing seconds to seal the win, Nazareth's second over the Hawks this season.

Nazareth trailed by as many as six points in the fourth quarter, 51-45, with as little 2:30 left. Samantha Peebles scored on a layup with 2:26 to go, then Woodard hit her first three-pointer with 1:25 to go to draw Nazareth to within one, 51-50. Then, after Pine made one of two free throws for Hartwick, Nazareth called time out to set up the winning play for Woodard.

Nazareth had leads of 16-9 and 25-19 after the first two quarters respectively as Peebles scored nine of her 15 points. Hartwick came back to take the lead midway through the third quarter before settling for a 39-39 tie heading into the fourth quarter as Nazareth's Erica Bradley beat the buzzer with a basket to knot the score.

Rachel Benedict made four three-pointers for the Golden Flyers and finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Peebles also had 10 rebounds to go with her 15 points. Caitlin Corbett led Hartwick with 17 points; Mary Shoeherr added 15.
