Big Third Quarter Sends Women's Hoops to Road Win

The No. 18 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team forced 34 turnovers and finished with a 38-23 scoring advantage in the second half Wednesday night to defeat UW-Platteville 67-58 in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest in Platteville, Wis.

 

Trailing by six at halftime, the Warhawks (15-3 overall, 5-2 WIAC) outscored the Pioneers 21-7 in the third quarter and converted 6-of-8 free throws to maintain their lead in the fourth.

 

Sophomore guard Becky Raeder posted a team-high 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting off the bench. Senior guard Brooke Trewyn contributed 12 points, six rebounds, three blocks and seven steals, which tied for the 17th-most in one game in school history. Senior forward Andrea Meinert was also in double figures with 12 points to go along with four rebounds.

 

Junior forward Olivia Freckmann added nine points, seven rebounds and three steals off the bench.

 

After scoring the first four points of the game, UW-Whitewater took its largest lead of the first quarter with 1:36 on the clock after a jumper by Meinert, and led 17-13 by the end of the period.

 

In the second, UW-Platteville (5-13, 1-6) took a 25-20 advantage at the 5:30 mark thanks to a 10-0 run. The Warhawks responded with a 7-0 run for a two-point lead, but the Pioneers recorded the final four points of the quarter to take a 35-29 halftime lead.

 

UW-Whitewater tied the game with 8:26 left in the third by opening the half on a 6-0 run, which extended to 19-2 after Raeder's layup just beyond the midway point of the frame.

 

UW-Platteville drew within six early in the fourth quarter and narrowed its deficit to five with 6:47 to go, but Raeder scored five straight points to bring the advantage back to double digits 30 seconds later.

 

The Pioneers got as close as five with 3:23 remaining, but the Warhawks scored the next six points to resume control of the contest.

 

UW-Whitewater plays its fourth road game in its last five this Saturday at 5 p.m. at UW-Eau Claire.
