Maloney's First Career Double-Double Leads No. 10 CNU Women Past St. Mary's (Md.), 64-33

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Christopher Newport sophomore Micah Maloney scored a team-high 15 points and hauled in a career-high 10 rebounds for her first career double-double, leading the way as the 10th-ranked Captains (16-2, 10-1) breezed by St. Mary's (Md.), 64-33. CNU was dominant on the glass, falling just one rebound shy of the facility record with 64 carems, winning the battle of the boards by a season-high 28 rebounds. 

The Captains have now won five straight and held onto second place in the Capital Athletic Conference standings. It was also the 12th straight home victory, marking the fifth longest win streak since the Freeman Center opened in 2000-01. 

In the first half, CNU paired one of it's best offensive quarters of the season with statistically the finest defensive quarter all-time to build a 25-point halftime lead. The Captains scored 30 points for the fourth time this season when they raced out to a 30-9 lead after the first quarter. Then, in the second, they set a new program record by holding the Seahawks to just one point in the second quarter. St. Mary's (Md.) was held to 0-for-8 from the field by the CNU defense, with eight turnovers in the period. 

In the dominant first half, the Captains started the scoring with a 16-3 run to pull ahead by double figures in the first five minutes. Senior Devon Byrd had five points in the opening spurt while Maloney added four. CNU caught fire from long-range to end the first quarter, getting back-to-back triples from senior Makenzie Fancher to kickstart another 14-3 run to end the stanza. In the final minute of the first, sophomore Kiana Kirkland drained a pair of three-pointers to extend the lead to 30-9. 

Facing a Seahawks squad that played just seven players in the game, the Captains showcased it's depth by getting all 16 active players on the floor. No one played more than 19 minutes in the game and all but one player registered at least one rebound in the impressive rebounding performance. 

On the glass, the Captains matched the most offensive rebounds in a game, with 31, since January 3, 2002 when CNU grabbed 33 boards off the glass against Southern Virginia University. On Wednesday night, CNU was led by Maloney with 10 rebounds, while seniors Byrd and Jasmine Bonivel added seven and eight, respectively. 

The depth showed on the scoresheet, as CNU bench outscored the St. Mary's reserves, 39-2. Kirkland registered her third straight double-figure scoring performance with 11 points to lead the way ofof the bench. Rookie Bailey Hodges and senior Anitra Thomas each added six in the game. 

The Captains defense grabbed 20 more steals and forced 26 turnovers while holding the Seahawks to just 11-of-45 shooting in the game. Kerri Kline scored a a game-high 17 points for St. Mary's while adding six rebounds and three steals.

CNU will return to action on Saturday, January 27 as they travel to Wesley College in Dover, Del. for a 1:00 pm tip against the Wolverines.
