Case Western Reserve University junior forward Hillary Hellmann became the 15th-player in program history to reach the 1,000-point mark for her career during the Spartans' 78-61 loss to Washington University (Mo.) at Horsburgh Gymnasium in Cleveland, Ohio on Friday night.
Hellmann led all players in Friday's game with 21 points and added a team-high seven rebounds. She finished the game shooting eight-of-22 overall from the floor and two-of-six from three-point range, including a three-pointer with 4:45 remaining in the third quarter that put her over the 1,000-point milestone for her career.
Hellmann became the third Spartan player in the last two seasons to reach the 1,000-point mark, after former Spartan Jess McCoy and current senior Kara Hageman each hit the milestone during the 2016-17 campaign. McCoy also accomplished the feat at home against Washington.
Sophomore guard Kendall McConico added 15 points, six rebounds and four assists in a well-rounded effort for CWRU, while freshman guard Emily Todd scored 12 in the game to round out the Spartans' double-figure scorers.
Behind an early 7-0 run, including five-straight points from Hellmann, the Spartans jumped out to 9-7 lead with 4:48 remaining in the first quarter. After the Bears regained the advantage, a three-pointer by McConico put the Spartans back ahead 12-11 with 2:20 remaining in the period. However, the Bears would carry a 17-15 lead into the second quarter, and would expand their lead to 10 after opening the frame on an 11-3 run. Washington would lead by as many as 13 points in the second quarter, and close the half with a 40-29 advantage, despite a nine-point outburst during the period by Todd.
Washington's lead would grow to 18 points, 49-31, with 6:13 to play in the third, but five-straight points from Hellmann (including her 1,000th career) and a three from junior guard Alexis Amburgey trimmed the advantage back to 11, 51-40, with 3:43 to go in the quarter. Amburgey would cut into the lead further with a layup that made the score 59-50 heading into the fourth quarter. However, the Bears were able to pull away in the fourth quarter, on their way to the 17-point win.
Case Western Reserve fell to 3-11 on the season with the loss, including a 0-4 University Athletic Association record, while Washington improved to 11-4 with a 2-2 UAA mark.
The Spartans will conclude their home weekend on Sunday, January 21st against the 22nd-ranked University of Chicago Maroons. Tip-off at Horsburgh Gymnasium is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
