Oneonta Women Overcome Quick Cortland Start to Earn 77-66 Victory

CORTLAND, N.Y. - Alexa Amalbert scored 20 points as Oneonta overcame an early hot start by Cortland to defeat the host Red Dragons, 77-66, in a SUNYAC women's basketball game.

Oneonta improved to 6-2 in the SUNYAC and 11-4 overall. Cortland is now 7-2 in the conference and 8-6 overall. Cortland will host Keuka in a non-league game Wednesday at 5 p.m.

Amalbert made four of Oneonta's 10 3-pointers and also finished with five rebounds. Leanne Corso scored 17 points and grabbed eight boards and Madeline Frank added 14 points and a team-high nine rebounds.

Shana Crespo (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) led Cortland with 14 points and five rebounds. Kristy Vitucci (Deer Park) tallied 13 points, while Kerry McHugh (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) and Justine Crespo (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) each ended with 11 points and five rebounds. Taylor Miller (Freeport) led the team with five assists.

Cortland shot 10-of-15 from the floor in the opening quarter. The Red Dragons led 18-6 six minutes into the game and held a 22-19 advantage after one period. Cortland, however, was limited to 11-of-46 shooting (24 percent) from the floor over the final three quarters and finished the game at 34 percent. Oneonta shot 52 percent in the second half and finished at 48 percent, and the guests made 42 percent (10-of-24) of their 3-point attempts.

Cortland trailed 34-30 at halftime, and was still down by four at 46-42 after a J. Crespo jumper with 3:27 left in the third. Oneonta, however, went on a 10-2 run, capped by a Samantha Lisikatos 3-pointer with 30 seconds left, to take a 56-44 lead.

Oneonta led by 10 entering the fourth. Cortland got back to within six when Vitucci was fouled attempting a 3-pointer and made all three free throws with 7:29 left. Oneonta responded with a Corso layup and a Amalbert trey to go up 11, and the lead was 12 at 72-60 with 2:32 remaining on a Clara Culeton jumper.

Cortland made one last push and got back to within six on a Tanna Mohammed (Huntington/Elwood-John H. Glenn) free throw with 19 seconds left. Amalbert sealed the win for Oneonta with two free throws with 12 seconds remaining.
