St. Louis, Mo., Jan. 12, 2018 – The Washington University in St. Louis and Brandeis University women's basketball teams combined for 67 fouls, one short of a Division III record, as the Bears dropped a 92-84 decision to the Judges Friday evening in the WU Field House during University Athletic Association (UAA) play.

The Bears fell to 9-4 overall and 0-2 within UAA while Brandeis improved to 9-3 overall and 1-1 within UAA play. WashU shot a season-low 25-percent from beyond the arc, making 5-of-25 attempts, while Brandeis finished 9-of-19 (47.4%).

Four players finished in double figures for the Bears as junior Madeline Homoly led all scorers with 25 points. Senior Natalie Orr (16), sophomore Kristina Schmelter (14) and junior Rachael Sondag (13) also added double digit totals.

The Bears and Judges traded leads six times in the first quarter as WashU held a 19-17 advantage after 10 minutes of play. Brandeis' Katherine Puda hit a jumper to give the Judges a 17-16 lead with 2:22 to go but three free-throws down the stretch for WashU pushed the Bears back ahead.

Brandeis went on a 17-4 run to open the second quarter and led by 11 with 4:19 left in the second. The Bears cut the lead to seven points but the Judges scored the final six points of the half and led 43-30.

With five minutes left in the fourth quarter, Sondag leapt in front of the Judges passing lane and tipped a ball towards the baseline. Before the ball exited the court she made an all-in-one motion of jumping and passing the ball to Orr under the basket. Orr made the layup while getting fouled for the and-one play to pull the Bears within eight, 71-63.

However, the Bears struggled to cut Brandeis' lead to less than seven points. Seven points separated WashU and Brandeis five times in the second half until senior Shelby Mann sank a free-throw to make WashU trail by six, 82-76, with 1:46 left in the fourth.

The Judges and Bears scored 16 of the final 18 points from the free-throw line, with the only basket coming on a layup by Homoly on the dish from junior Becca Clark-Callender.

Camila Casaneuva led the Judges with 17 points, including 11-of-16 shooting from the free-throw line. Katie Goncalo and Katherine Puda also finished with 13 points apiece.
