DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Delaware Valley University used a late 16-3 run to overcome visiting Wilkes University and earn its first Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom victory of the season by a score of 83-71.

 

Playing in their first home game in more than a month and their first MAC Freedom home game of the season, the Aggies moved into the win column in league play at 1-2 while improving to 4-10 overall. The Lady Colonels dropped to 0-3 in conference play and 4-9 overall.

 

DelVal scored the first five points of the game before Wilkes countered with six straight to take an early on- point lead. The teams continued to trade baskets for the remainder of the opening quarter before Morgan Mitchell capped the scoring with a buzzer-beating, three-pointer to pull the Aggies within one, 15-14.

 

The Lady Colonels led by four, 20-16, early in the second before DelVal went on a 14-2 run to open up the largest lead of the game. Monika Smallwood sparked the run with six straight points and Lauren Moretti capped it with a trey to make it 30-22. Mitchell dished out three assists during the spurt. The Aggies led by as many as 10 in the quarter before Wilkes closed it out with an 8-4 run to cut the deficit to 38-32 at the break.

 

Danielle Skedzielewski got hot in the third quarter, scoring 12 points including a pair of treys to help DelVal outscore Wilkes, 22-20, in the stanza and maintain a 60-52 lead heading into the fourth.

 

The Lady Colonels scored the first four points of the final frame, en route to a 14-9 run that gave them their first lead since the first quarter at 68-67. Five different players scored during the run while Catey McFadden and Vanessa Whitecavage each hit big three-pointers.

 

From there, the Aggies locked in and finished the game with 16 of the next 19 points to pull away with the 83-71 home victory. Skedzielewski and Ashley Smink each had six points down the stretch and were perfect from the free throw line to help close out the first conference win of the young season.

 

Skedzielewski led DelVal in scoring with 22 points, including 18 in the second half. She also grabbed seven rebounds in the game. Mitchell notched her first career double-double with a career-high 11 assists to go with 11 points and a steal. Smallwood recorded 14 points and nine boards while Smink added 16 points and two steals. Amber Grohowski was strong on the glass with 10 boards, including five of the teams 13 offensive rebounds.

 

Wilkes' Gianna Roberts had a double-double of 12 points and 10 assists. McFadden finished with five treys and 20 points as well as five rebounds and a pair of steals. Whitecage and Alyssa Alfano each recorded eight points.

 

The Aggies will play another home conference game on Saturday, January 13 when they take on Misericordia University at 1 p.m.
