Gwynedd Mercy Nails Down Road CSAC Win At Immaculata

IMMACULATA, PA. -- The Gwynedd Mercy University Women's Basketball team scored a 63-50 road victory on Saturday afternoon at Immaculata University in Colonial States Athletic Conference action.

Bianca Adams and Susan Bossler led the Griffins with 10 points apiece combining to score eighteen in the second half. Julianna Hoisington and Alison Szyszko added nine points each, with Hoisington pulling down a team-high 10 rebounds.

Trailing 8-0 to start the contest, the Griffins turned to their bench to look for a spark. After cutting the deficit in half the Mighty Macs would answer to stretch the lead up to nine (13-4) with just under four minutes remaining in the first quarter. GMercyU would not go away responding with a 9-0 run started by a Sydney Thompson jumper. Larissa Leyes would connect on a three pointer followed by Chyanne Fine closing out the run with a pair of free throws and a layup with 1:23 remaining in the quarter to tie the contest 13-13. However a layup would give Immaculata a 16-14 edge after the first ten minutes of action.

The Mighty Macs would hold the lead at 20-15 early in the second quarter. The Griffins would answer with a 6-0 spurt to take their first lead of the game at 21-20 when Hoisington connected on a jumper at the seven minute mark. Szyszko would highlight another run (7-0) when her old fashioned three-point play would give Gwynedd a 28-24 lead with 2:26 remaining in the half. Immaculata would answer with a pair of three pointers to retake the lead but a Rebecca Fuehrer drive would tie the game 30-30. A Hoisington three pointer with thirty seconds left would give the Griffins a 33-30 lead heading into the halftime break. The GMercyU bench would outscore Immaculata 19-2 at the break.

A Bossler three pointer and three point play extended the Griffin lead to 41-30 to start the third quarter. IU chipped away, cutting the lead to four, but Adams scored all eight points of game-changing 8-0 run over the final three minutes of the quarter that gave Gwynedd a 51-39 edge heading into the fourth quarter. The Griffins would continue their run into the fourth, a Bossler jumper would cap the 13-0 run and give GMercyU their largest lead (56-39) with 6:54 remaining. A Szyszko driving layup would hold the lead (58-44) with four minutes remaining. Leyes would close out the game with a pair of free throws and a three pointer for the 63-50 victory.

For the game GMercyU out-rebounded the Macs, 42-37, and held their opponents to 18-of-58 (31.0%) from the field. Gwynedd shot 23-of-61 (37.7%) making thirteen team free throws while scoring 30 points off of 23 IU turnovers.

The Griffins will continue on the road as the travel to Cedar Crest for a CSAC tilt on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
