A shorthanded Hope College women's basketball team relied on teamwork to win an early Top-10 showdown on Wednesday in Angola, Indiana and claim the outright Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association lead.

The No. 5 Flying Dutch defeated No. 9 Trine, last year's league champion, 57-46 in the Thunder's first game at their new fieldhouse.

Freshmen post players Olivia Voskuil of Holland, Michigan (Holland Christian HS), pictured, and Ashleigh Thomas of Shelby Township, Michigan (Lutheran North) combined for 21 points and 20 rebounds to help Hope overcome the absence of injured starter Francesca Buchanan, a preseason All-American.

Hope improved to 13-0 overall and 4-0 in MIAA play. The Flying Dutch lead three teams by one game: Albion, Calvin, and Trine.

"It was a team victory, as they usually are with our team," head coach Brian Morehouse said. "We don't typically rely on one person. Tonight was no different.

"We're thrilled with the win. We've finished an important stretch with three of our first four league games on the road. We have a good stretch of games at home."

Hope returns to DeVos Fieldhouse Saturday for a 3 p.m. game vs. Kalamazoo.

The Flying Dutch never trailed after scoring the game's first seven points.

Senior guard Madison Geers of Scottville, Michigan (Mason County Central) continued her scoring surge with a team-high 13 points. It was her third consecutive game in double digits.

Eight first-half points from Geers helped the Flying Dutch build a 32-23 halftime lead.

Voskuil — making her first collegiate start — recorded her first double-double with the Flying Dutch by grabbing a career-high 15 rebounds and scoring 10 points.

Thomas came off the bench to add 11 points — one of her collegiate-best — and five rebounds.

Junior guard Victoria Swift of LaGrange, Illinois (Lyons Township) chipped in seven points off the bench.

Eleven different players played at least nine minutes for Hope.
