WILKES-BARRE (PA) – Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom action began on Wednesday night and it was host King's College that notched a 65-51 triumph over Delaware Valley University.
The victory improved the Lady Monarchs to 6-5 overall while the Aggies fell to 3-9 and 0-1.
King's scored the first eight points of the evening, but DelVal responded with a 14-5 run to take a one-point advantage after the opening quarter. Danielle Skedzielewski led the rally with eight points, including back-to-back makes from 3-point land.
Ashley Smink then opened the second quarter with a basket to give the Aggies a 16-13 lead. However, a 14-4 Lady Monarch burst gave the home team a seven-point advantage and they took that margin into halftime.
DelVal did cut its deficit to four and that was after a Sarah Wills trey in the opening 40 seconds of the second half made it a 29-25 ballgame. King's responded with 12 of the next 15 and the Aggies never got closer than seven points the rest of the way.
The Lady Monarchs were led by Alexis Steeber's 22 points. Rebecca Prociak added 16 points, seven rebounds and six assists and Mackenzie Yori chipped in with 10 points.
Skedzielewski paced DelVal with 15 points. Amber Grohowski was 7-for-12 from the field as the senior center finished with a career-high 14 points. She also matched her career high in rebounds with eight and blocked a shot as well. Smink netted 12 points to go with four assists and three steals. Lauren Moretti matched Grohowski for team-high honors in rebounds with eight, including six on the offensive end.
The Aggies will make the short trip to Center Valley when they battle MAC Freedom foe DeSales University on Saturday, January 6 (1 p.m.).
