TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology pushed the nation's longest current NCAA Division III women's basketball home winning streak to 30 games by rallying to defeat Hanover College 66-57 on Wednesday night.
The Fightin' Engineers trailed by 16 points after a hot shooting first quarter from visiting Hanover. Rose-Hulman methodically chipped away at the margin, gaining its first lead midway through the fourth quarter.
Junior Chiarra Franklin led the Rose-Hulman offense with a career-high 21 points on 8-13 from the field. Junior Ally Bromenschenkel added a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds, along wtih five blocked shots and three steals.
Junior Abby Bromenschenkel set a Rose-Hulman single-game school record with eight steals and was the third player in double figures with 13 points. Junior Taylor Graham also scored eight points with six steals off the bench.
Hanover relied on the three-point shot to build a 26-10 lead after one quarter. Rose-Hulman moved within eight points at 39-31 at the half, then closed within four points at 49-45 after the third quarter.
The Fightin' Engineers finally knotted the score at 51-51 on a layup by Franklin with 6:59 remaining and took the lead at 53-51 on a Graham basket at the 6:26 mark. Hanover regained the lead at 55-53, before a conventional three-point play by Ally Bromenschenkel gave Rose-Hulman the lead at 56-55.
Rose-Hulman then outscored Hanover 10-2 in the final 4:41 to secure its school record 30th straight home win.
The Fightin' Engineers improved to 9-3 and lead the HCAC standings outright at 5-0 in league play. Hanover dropped to 7-5 and 3-2 in conference games. Rose-Hulman returns to action at Earlham College on Saturday at 4 p.m.
