The No. 12 UW-Whitewater women's basketball team defeated No. 3 UW-Oshkosh (10-1) at the buzzer with a mid-range jumper from the corner by sophomore Camri Conley to clinch their conference season opener by a 54-52 score in a thrilling contest at Kachel Gymnasium.
The win was also the 300th in the career of head coach Keri Carollo. She became the fourth coach in WIAC history to reach the milestone. Carollo, in her 16th year with the team, has led UW-Whitewater to four conference championships, one WIAC Tournament title and nine NCAA Tournament appearances, including three trips to the Final Four.
The Warhawks (11-1) clawed their way back from a double-digit deficit in the first half to take down conference foe.
Senior guard Malia Smith lead the Warhawks with 11 points and six rebounds. Senior forward Andrea Meinert contributed 10 points, and junior Olivia Freckmann recorded nine points and 12 rebounds.
Despite the slow start for UW-Whitewater, the Warhawks recorded three baskets in three possessions at the end of the first quarter to close the Titans' lead to four at the end of the quarter.
UW-Oshkosh took its largest lead of the game at 24-14 midway through the second quarter, but the Warhawks eventually found an offensive rhythm, going on a 7-2 run to end the period with baskets from Freckmann and Conley to close the deficit to just four points at the end of the half. Freckmann tallied six points and seven rebounds in the first half to help keep UW-Whitewater close.
UW-Whitewater came out ready to fight after the half. Senior Brooke Trewyn finished a layup and tied the score 29-29 early in the third. Freckmann gave the Warhawks their first lead of the game at the 4:23 mark.
UW-Whitewater and UW-Oshkosh fought back and forth in the second half, recording seven lead changes between the two teams.
The Warhawks outscored the Titans 20-16 in the fourth quarter. Meinert recorded an offensive board and basket with 4:29 remaining in the fourth quarter to tie the score 45-45. UW-Oshkosh rallied for a five-point lead with 51 seconds left in play.
Trewyn hit two clutch free-throws to bring the Warhawks within three points, followed by a three-point play from Smith to tie the score, 52-52, with 34 seconds remaining.
After a defensive stop at the other end, UW-Whitewater inbounded the ball from the sideline with 3.8 seconds remaining. Freckmann looked to the corner and found Conley, who pump faked, took one dribble and finished the pull-up jumper at the buzzer to end the contest and earn the victory for the Warhawks.
The Warhawks continue play Saturday, Jan. 6, at UW-River Falls at 3 p.m.
