William Paterson Women's Basketball Closes Out 2017 with 71-54 Road Loss at Moravian

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The William Paterson women's basketball team (6-6) closed out the 2017 calendar year with a 71-54 road defeat at Moravian (10-2) in the Roosevelt's 21st Greyhound Classic championship game Dec. 31.
 
Senior Tori Woetzel and junior Ashley Castillo earned spots on the All-Tournament team for their performance during the two games this weekend. Moravian's Trista Cunningham also earned a spot on the team, while the Greyhounds' Camile McPherson earned the tournament's Most Valuable Player honor. Rounding out the All-Tournament team was Delaney Arbore of Alleghany College and Andrea Watkins of Penn State-Lehigh Valley.
 
Castillo led all scorers with a career-best 22 points on 41 (9-22) percent shooting for the afternoon. Woetzel notched a double-digit scoring effort with 11 points, while junior Julie Rovito seized 10 rebounds. McPherson led three player in double figures for Moravian with 17 points on 25 (5-20) percent shooting.
 
The Greyhounds held a significant advantage at the free-throw line, netting 20-of-29 (69 percent) attempts while the Pioneers only earned 14 attempts, converting 10 for a 71 percent clip. Despite forcing 18 turnovers, WP only earned eight points off turnovers for the game.
 
The Pioneers got out to a strong start, taking their largest lead when junior CeCe Green knocked down a jumper to give WP a five-point edge (8-3) at the 6:52 mark of the first quarter. The opening stanza proved to be a high-scoring affair, and the Orange and Black held a two-point lead (19-17) at the first break. The Greyhound offense continued to roll during the second stanza, while the home team's defense stifled WP a bit as Moravian took a 34-30 lead into halftime.
 
After the Greyhounds extended the lead to five (40-35) early in the second half, the Pioneers scored six of the next seven points to level the scoring, 41-41. It was be the final time that WP pulled level with Moravian however, as the Greyhounds took a 52-45 lead into the fourth quarter, and eventually pulled away in the final stanza for the 17-point win.
 
As the calendar changes to January, the Pioneers will turn their focus back to New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) play  where they tip-off 2018 with a home contest against The College of New Jersey on Wednesday, Jan. 3, at 8:00 p.m.
