KING'S WOMEN FALL TO VASSAR IN CONSOLATION GAME AT CATHOLIC TOURNEY
WASHINGTON DC -- The Vassar College women's basketball team outscored King's College 21-13 in the fourth quarter to post a 70-61 victory over King's College in the consolation game of the Fairfield Inn Holiday Tournament Saturday at Catholic University, Washington DC.
With the win, Vassar improved to 6-2 while King's slipped to 5-5.
King's built an early 7-6 lead after buckets from Rebecca Prociak and Alexis Steeber and a three-pointer by Mackenzie Yori with 5:51 left in the first quarter. But Vassar outscored King's 10-6 the rest of the way to take a 17-12 lead into the second quarter.
After Vassar upped the lead to 19-12, King's closed to within 21-17 with 8:41 to play in the half after three foul shots by Lindsey Dippre and a driving lay-up by Rachael DeTore. But Vassar answered with a 7-3 spurt to build its biggest lead of the half at 28-20 following a three-pointer by Nicole Teta at the 4:47 mark. The Cardinals would later take a 35-28 lead into the break.
In the third quarter, King's came out of the gates with a 10-4 surge and closed to within 39-38 on a Yori jumper with 5:49 on the clock. But the Cardinals scored the next five points to go up 44-38 after a Samarah Cook three-pointer at the 4:30 mark.
But King's closed out the period with a 10-5 run to cut the score to 49-48 heading into the fourth quarter.
King's eventually took a 54-52 lead with 6:41 remaining after three straight points by Olivia Hoffman. With the scored tied at 55-55 with 4:06 to play Vassar outscored King's 15-6 the rest of the way to secure the victory.
Steeber led King's with 14 points and eight rebounds while Prociak followed with 13 points and nine boards. DeTore added 12 points while Yori chipped in with nine points, seven rebounds, and four assists.
Sophie Nicks led Vassar with 25 points while Teta followed with 11.
King's will return to the court Wednesday when the Lady Monarchs open up MAC Freedom Conference play with an 8:00 PM home matchup against Delaware Valley University in Scandlon Gymnasium.
