Gettysburg Stays Hot in Miami, Blows Out Alfred

MIAMI, Fla. – Sophomore Ashley Gehrin (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) scored 19 points and classmate Kiera Cesareo (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) added 16 as Gettysburg College blew past Alfred University 81-34 at the HoopMIA D3 Holiday Shootout on the campus of Barry University Wednesday evening.
 
Since suffering its only loss of the season to Elizabethtown College on Nov. 28, Gettysburg (9-1) has won four in a row with three of those wins coming by at least 33 points. Wednesday's affair with Alfred (2-6) saw the Bullets shoot 21-of-37 (56.8 percent) inside the three-point arc and score a season-high 36 points off turnovers.
 
Gehrin continued her hot streak by going 6-of-8 from the floor, including 3-of-5 from three-point land. The sophomore has scored in double-figures in six consecutive games and is averaging 16.8 points per game over that span. Cesareo tied her personal high with 16 points to pace the Gettysburg reserves, which out-scored the Alfred bench 37-1.
 
The Saxons only trailed 18-16 with 2:01 left in the first quarter, but the Bullets tacked on the final six points of the frame and the first 10 of the second to open an 18-point advantage. Senior Kendra Meredith (Boyds, Md./Northwest) set up a fast-break lay-up for sophomore Olivia Briggs (Ocean View, N.J./Ocean City) which made it 34-16 with 4:04 left before halftime. Gettysburg walked into the locker room with a 38-21 lead.
 
Whatever hope Alfred had of getting back into the game was quickly dashed in the third quarter. Gettysburg out-scored its opponent 31-9 in the period with 13 of those points following turnovers by the Saxons. Cesareo connected on a trio of three-pointers and a free throw in just over a minute to push the lead to 69-28 with 1:11 left in the third.
 
The Bullets' bench accounted for the team's final 12 points in the fourth quarter.
 
Gettysburg finished 30-of-62 (48.4 percent) overall the field, including 9-of-25 from beyond the arc. The Bullets finished with a 44-24 advantage on the glass with 15 of those caroms coming on the offensive end. The team also dished out 20 assists and accounted for a season-high 14 steals. Over the last two days in Miami, Gettysburg out-scored its opponents 54-17 in the third quarter.
 
Junior Emma Dorshimer (Jenkintown, Pa./Jenkintown) tallied 13 points and enters 2018 just 33 points shy of 1,000 for her career. Senior Emily Gibbons (Annapolis, Md./Severn School) put up eight points, seven rebounds, and two steals in 18 minutes of action. Meredith dished out six assists, while junior Teal Tasker (Chambersburg, Pa./Mercersburg Academy) added four dimes.
 
Bri Hicks and Kalyn Boland finished with 12 and 11 points, respectively, for Alfred. The Saxons finished 13-of-45 (28.9 percent) from the floor and committed 21 turnovers.
 
Gettysburg returns to action at Swarthmore College on Saturday, Jan. 6, at 3 p.m.
