Montclair, NJ – Senior forward Katie Sire scored 27 points, including the last four in a 13-point fourth-quarter run as Montclair State pulled away from Brooklyn College for a 48-37 victory at the Panzer Athletic Center on Tuesday evening.
Senior Taylor Harmon scored five of her nine points in the decisive run as the Red Hawks (9-1) extending their winning streak to six games with the victory. MSU remained perfect against Brooklyn College (7-0) as the teams squared off for the first time since a Montclair win in November 2002.
Alexandra Moogan scored 13 points for the Bulldogs (7-2), who had their two-game winning streak snapped.
The Red Hawks held three-point leads at the end of the first three quarters however Moogan knotted the contest at 32-32 with a high-arching three-pointer from the right wing 25 seconds into the fourth quarter. Sire answered with a basket and Kate Tobie sank a free throw giving Montclair a 35-32 advantage.
Moogan's layup in the paint with 6:46 to go cut the lead to a point, 35-34 however that would be the last points Brooklyn would score until the closing seconds.
Freshman Taylor Brown ignited the run with layup and Janae Mayfield put one in less than a minute later before a jumper in the paint by Harmon gave Montclair at 41-34 advantage. Harmon converted a three-point play the next time down the floor pushing the lead to double digits with Sire's back-to-back field goals widening the lead to 48-34 with 22 seconds to go.
Moogan finally ended the run with 14 seconds left on a three-pointer for what turned out to be the final score.
Sire grabbed nine rebounds and registered three steals for Montclair, which shot 52 percent in the second half. Brown and Harmon totaled five caroms apiece.
Karen Mak had nine points, six rebounds and five assists for the Bulldogs, who shot just 23 percent (12-of-51) from the field, but managed to stay in the game thanks in part to a 38-30 advantage on the board, including 20 on the offensive glass which led to 14 second-chance points.
Montclair State is now off until Friday, December 29 when it hosts the Gelston-Paskert Holiday Tournament at the Panzer Athletic Center. MSU will face DeSales University in the first game of the two-day contest beginning at 4:30 pm. Top-ranked Tufts University takes on Albright College in the other first-round game at 6:30 pm. The championship and third-place games will be at 1pm and 3pm respectively on Saturday, December 30.
