MIDDLETOWN, CT – The Manhattanville College women's basketball team held off Wesleyan University Wednesday night by a score of 70-65, pushing its winning streak to six, the program's longest winning streak since the 2009-10 team also won six in a row.

Sophomore Kymane Jones (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville ) scored 19 points to lead Manhattanville (7-1), while junior Kayleah McGuire (Somers, N.Y./Somers) added 15 and nine rebounds, and senior Joiada Darnell (St. Albans, N.Y./Humanities and the Arts) added 11 and eight rebounds. Maeve Vitale had 14 to lead Wesleyan (5-2) while Tara Berger had 10 points and nine rebounds.

The two teams went back and forth in the opening 20 minutes, featuring three lead changes, three ties, and neither holding a lead larger than six points.

The Cardinals led for much of the opening quarter, courtesy of six points from Berger in the opening 3:33. Back-to-back three-point shots by freshman Sarah Coutu (Cranston, R.I./Cranston East) capped a Manhattanville 8-0 burst running from the end of the first through the early part of the second quarter, turning an 18-14 deficit into a 22-18 lead.

After Olivia Gorman made a lay-up to halve Manhattanville's lead, Jones made four straight free throws to open up the largest lead of the half for either team. After Wesleyan battled back to tie the game at 35, McGuire made a lay-up just before the buzzer to put the Valiants up two at the half. McGuire finished the half with 10 points to lead all scorers, while Jones, Coutu and Darnell added eight, eight, and seven, respectively.

The Valiants held leads of six points and, on two separate occasions, five points, in the third quarter, led by five points from Jones, but Wesleyan responded each time, closing the quarter with a 7-0 run to take a 52-50 lead to the fourth.

The Valiants made five of their first seven shots in the fourth quarter to regain a 60-56 lead. Manhattanville held on from there, as the Cardinals closed the margin to two on three separate occasions, but were unable to tie the game or regain the lead over the final 7:45, as the Valiants hit 8-of-12 free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.

Manhattanville returns to Kennedy Gymnasium Saturday for a 1 p.m. tip with Keystone College, the team's last game of the 2017 calendar year.
