Hawks soar past Bison in CCC action

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Nichols College women's basketball team suffered a 57-31 setback on the road at Roger Williams University on Tuesday night in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action in Bristol, R.I.
 
Nichols (2-3, 1-2 CCC) held a 15-14 lead at the end of the first quarter, but Roger Williams (6-2, 2-1 CCC) outscored the Bison 43-16 the rest of the way to pull away for the conference win.
 
Sophomore Jessica Larsh led the Bison with an all-around game of 10 points, four rebounds, one assist, four steals and a block. Freshman Beth Laing added a career-best seven points and two rebounds, while junior Amy Assad came off the bench to score five points and grab five rebounds. Freshman Isabella Nerney also recorded five boards in the defeat.
 
Roger Williams was led by 17 points from sophomore Gabby Jerahian. Senior Mariah Nicholas added seven points and a game-high nine rebounds, while classmate Anna Walther recorded six points, seven rebounds, four assists, and three steals.
 
The Bison fell into an early 9-2 hole to start the game, but Laing and Larsh trimmed the deficit to 9-6 with back-to-back jumpers and 3:37 to play in the period. After a triple from Gabby Jerahian, a layup from senior Allison Cerrato and a triple from Isabella Nerney sandwiched a jumper from Mariah Nicholas to make it a 14-11 game with 1:16 remaining.
 
Another Cerrato layup followed by a pair of Amy Assad free throws ended the period for the Bison and gave Nichols its first lead of the game at 15-14.
 
Unfortunately for the Bison, Roger Williams would outscore the visitors 12-2 in the second frame to take a 26-17 lead into the break.
 
Senior Brooke Packard opened the scoring in the third quarter with a layup, but the Hawks answered with a 10-2 run capped by a triple from Jerahian to make it a 36-21 lead for the home team with 6:09 to play in the frame. Larsh ended the run with a pair of free throws, but another Nicholas basket gave Roger Williams a 38-23 lead midway through the frame. The Hawks would eventually take a 44-25 lead into the final period of play.
 
The Hawks would keep up the pressure in the fourth quarter, outscoring Nichols 13-6 over the final 10 minutes to post the 57-31 victory.
 
Nichols was held to 10-of-48 (20.8%) shooting on the night, while connecting on only 1-of-7 (14.3%) of its three-pointers and 10-of-17 (58.8%) of its free throws. Roger Williams connected on 22-of-68 (32.4%) of its attempts from the field, burying 5-of-21 (23.8%) of its triples and knocking down 8-of-12 (66.7%) of its free throws. The Hawks held a 49-37 advantage in rebounding while forcing 22 Nichols turnovers compared to just 13 for the home team.

Tuesday night was the 46th meeting between the two programs and Roger Williams leads the all-time series 29-17.
