CANTON, N.Y.- The SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team (1-5) were defeated by St. Lawrence University (2-3) 70-50 Tuesday night at Burkman Gymnasium. Junior guard Riley Luckie (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Ogdensburg) led the Bears in points and rebounds with 15 and six, respectively. Kaelyn Kohlasch and Katie Frederick each finished with 14 points for the Saints, while Frederick and Annabella Pugliese grabbed a team-high eight boards.
During the opening minutes, the teams exchanged baskets with Potsdam tying the contest twice, at 6:41 with a three from Mikayla Horton (Hammond, N.Y./Hammond) and once again at 6:13 with a shot behind the arc from Luckie. At 5:57, the Saints put together a 13-1 run to close out the first quarter and take a 21-9 lead.
St. Lawrence continued their strong play into the second with a 17-8 scoring advantage to take a 21 point lead into the half. Freshman guard Alexis Davis (Brooklyn, N.Y./Williamsburg H.S. Architecture & Design) scored six of the Bears' eight points during the 10 minute span with junior captain Abbey Smith (Bainbridge, N.Y./Bainbridge-Guilford) chipping in a layup.
Potsdam's offense picked up in the third with a 20-9 run that lasted most of the quarter. Senior forward Emily Drake (Athens, N.Y./Coxsackie-Athens) ignited the run with a layup and an old fashioned three point play from Luckie and a free throw from Davis capped the run. The Bears got the Saints lead down to 13 heading into the final quarter.
Cara Waterson started a 9-0 run for St. Lawrence that ended with a layup from Frederick at the 7:37 minute mark. Another 8-3 mini run for Potsdam, got the Saints' lead down to 17, but it was too little, too late as the foul line added to St. Lawrence's score in the closing minutes. The Saints took the 70-50 victory.
Davis finished with 10 points and four boards, while Horton contributed seven points.
Pugliese added to her totals with nine points and Waterson tacked on eight points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals for the Saint.
Potsdam will be back this weekend, when the Bears travel to Geneseo Friday for a 5:30 p.m. contest and Brockport Saturday for a 1 p.m. match-up.
