Grinnell women's basketball team puts up good fight in loss to Lake Forest

LAKE FOREST, Ill. – The Grinnell College women's basketball squad put up a great fight against a team unbeaten in league play, but in the end Lake Forest College came away with a 78-70 win Saturday afternoon.

 

The Pioneers fell behind by 10 points in the first half, but rallied to make it a three-point game by halftime. They then trailed by 12 in the second half, but again made things interesting by coming within three in the fourth period before the Foresters secured the win.

 

Kayla Morrissey '18 had a game-high 22 points for Grinnell to lead a charge of four Pioneers in double figures. She now has 1,131 for her career, which ranks sixth in program history.

 

Also in double figures for the Pioneers, who are 3-4 overall and 0-2 in the Midwest Conference, were Tyria Heath '21 with 14 points, Regan Kasprak '19 with 12 and Hanna Kessel '19 with 10.

 

Mikayla Kricfalusi '20 grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds, while Margaret Giles '18 added a career-best two assists and Morrissey two blocks. Daria Guzzo '19 and Claire Collier '21 had two steals each.

 

The Foresters, who never trailed, led 19-13 after one period and were up 32-22 in the second frame when Grinnell went on an eight-point run. Morrissey had all the points with a 3-pointer and five free throws to bring Grinnell within 32-30.

 

Lake Forest retained control and was up 37-34 at the break and stretched its cushion to 46-34 in the third period. Grinnell got back within four, but was then down 61-52 heading into the fourth quarter.

 

The Pioneers weren't done, though, as Kessel began the fourth frame with a layup, Heath added a jumper and Morrissey another jumper to bring Grinnell within 61-58 with 7:33 to go.

 

Lake Forest answered with a 7-2 run to go up by eight and Grinnell never got closer than seven after that. With the win, Lake Forest improved to 4-3 overall and 3-0 in the MWC.

 

The Pioneers travel to Mount Vernon Wednesday to take on Cornell College. The tip-off is at 7:30 p.m.
