Crespo "Sister Act" Leads Cortland Comeback vs. Oswego, 68-54

CORTLAND, N.Y. - Junior twin sisters Justine Crespo (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) and Shana Crespo (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) combined for 30 points, 18 rebounds, five blocks and six steals as Cortland defeated visiting Oswego, 68-54, in the SUNYAC opener for both teams.

Cortland (1-4, 1-0 SUNYAC) outscored the Lakers 39-19 in the second half after trailing 35-29 at halftime and by as many as 11 points in the first half.

Justine finished with career highs of 16 points, three steals and two blocks and matched her sister for the team lead with nine rebounds. She was 6-of-12 from the field and 4-of-6 from the foul line. Shana registered career bests of 14 points, nine rebounds, four assists, three blocks and three steals. She made 5-of-8 field goals and 4-of-5 free throws. Justine scored 14 of her 16 points and Shana scored nine of her 14 points during the second half.

Kerry McHugh (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) added 13 points, including three 3-pointers, and Kristy Vitucci (Deer Park) ended with 10 points and a career-high tying eight rebounds. Taylor Miller (Freeport) chipped in with seven points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Courtney Ameele led Oswego (2-5, 0-1 SUNYAC) with 20 points and four assists. Quincey Zimmerman scored 15 points, including 4-of-8 long-range shooting, and Rachael Windhausen totaled 14 points and seven rebounds.

Oswego opened the game on a 17-6 run, but Cortland to within five, 20-15, at the end of the first quarter. The Lakers again established an 11-point cushion at 35-24 on a Zimmerman free throw with 1:45 left in the half. The Red Dragons tallied the last five points of the half, capped by a Vitucci 3-pointer just before the buzzer, and trailed 35-29 at intermission.

Cortland allowed 10 Oswego offensive rebounds, but kept the Lakers from getting another for the first 14-plus minutes of the second half. The Red Dragons opened the third quarter on a 12-6 run, including six points by J. Crespo and McHugh's tying layup with 5:52 remaining. Cortland took its first lead of the game at 49-47 with 2:41 left in the third after J. Crespo's two free throws.

The Red Dragons entered the fourth up 51-48 and quickly pushed the lead to eight on a McHugh 3-pointer and a J. Crespo layup. Oswego closed to within six before S. Crespo hit layups at the 7:49 and 6:53 marks to push the advantage to double figures. Vitucci was fouled on a 3-point attempt and hit all three free throws to give the hosts a 63-50 lead with 5:31 left, and the Red Dragons led by at least 11 after that.

Cortland committed only four turnovers in the second half after losing the ball 11 times in the first half. Oswego ended with 22 turnovers, 12 in the second half. The Red Dragons held Oswego to 21 percent shooting over the final 20 minutes and 33 percent for the game. Cortland finished at 37 percent from the floor.

Cortland will host two-time defending SUNYAC champion New Paltz Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
