Villard Leads Eastern Connecticut Past RIC, 59-42

Providence, R.I.-Sophomore guard Jordyn Gauvin (Fall River, MA) scored a team-high 10 points as Rhode Island College fell, 59-42, to Eastern Connecticut in a Little East Conference women's basketball game played at The Murray Center on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

•  Gauvin added four boards and three assists in the loss.

• Sophomore forward Jessica Brielmaier (West Greenwich, RI) tied the game-high with 11 rebounds to go along with five points.

• Eastern Connecticut sophomore forward Mya Villard (Cromwell, CT) was dominant in the paint, leading the way with 25 points on 10-of-13 shooting. She also grabbed five boards, dished out four assists and made one steal.

• ECSU junior forward Kelsey Santagata (Stamford, CT) posted a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore guard Julie Jordan (Sterling, CT) rounded out the Warriors in double figures with a 10-point effort. She also hauled in eight rebounds.

• The visitors jumped out to a 6-0 lead just 2:21 into the first quarter and led 10-7 at the midway point. Eastern doubled up RIC and took a 16-8 lead after 10 minutes.

• Rhode Island College climbed to within four points, 16-12, at 8:07 of the second stanza, but that score stood for nearly three minutes before Eastern Connecticut closed out the half on an 8-2 run to lead by 10, 24-14, at the break.

• The third quarter saw Eastern steadily increase its lead and built a 44-24 advantage after three quarters. 

• RIC got within 15 points, 50-35, on a three-pointer by freshman guard Brooke Young (West Warwick, RI) with 6:02 left in the contest, but the Warriors never let the Anchorwomen get on a run to secure their first win of the year.

BY THE NUMBERS

• RIC shot 26.9% percent (18-of-67) from the field, 15.4 percent (4-of-26) from the three-point line and 50.0 percent (2-of-4) from the free throw line.

• Eastern Connecticut shot 45.8 percent (18-of-67) from the field, 14.3 percent (1-of-7) from the three-point line and 63.6 percent (14-of-22) from the free throw line.

•  Eastern Connecticut outrebounded RIC by a 40-39 margin, while RIC forced the Warriors into 15 turnovers, while committing 11 of its own, in the contest.
