POTSDAM, N.Y.- A second half surge lifted Clarkson University (4-2) over the SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team (1-3) 69-54 Tuesday night at Alumni Gymnasium. Junior captain Abbey Smith (Bainbridge, N.Y./Bainbridge-Guilford) led the Bears with 22 points and six rebounds. Devin Sorell recorded 29 points and dished out four assists, while Madison Shea had a double-double with 12 points and 11 boards and added six assists for the Golden Knights.
Smith was off to a hot start right from the gate. She opened the scoring with six straight points and another three for nine of Potsdam's 11 during the quarter. Junior guard Riley Luckie (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Ogdensburg) added the other two points. Clarkson held the 20-11 lead after the first with Sorell scoring eight of those points and Shea kicking in six.
The Bears rebounded for 16 points in the second and held the Golden Knights to 10 to get within three going into halftime. Smith totaled 11 points during the 10 minutes with Luckie pitching in four from the free throw line.
Clarkson got their lead out to 10 points following the third quarter by scoring 21 points to the Bears' 14. Sophomore guard Drew Dufrane (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) contributed five points and Luckie adding three after an old fashion three-point play. The Golden Knights went 4-for-10 from behind the arch from Sorell, Shea and Molly Stewart.
Play was back-and-forth through the first seven minutes of the quarter. Potsdam got Clarkson's lead down to eight with 3:13 to go, but that was the closest they would come. The Bears were forced to start fouling and the Golden Knights answered by going 9-for-10 to hold their lead and take the 69-54 win.
Luckie finished with 13 points, three assists and four rebounds, while freshman forward Hannah Marcellus (Potsdam, N.Y./Madrid-Waddington) grabbed a team high nine boards. Fellow freshman forward Nicole Hansen (Fulton, N.Y./G. Ray Bodley) finished with eight points and five rebounds.
Steward fell short of her own double-double with 14 points and nine boards and Hannah Earl grabbed eight rebounds and put up seven points.
Potsdam shot 33.3-percent from the floor, while Clarkson shot 33.9-percent.
The Bears will open SUNYAC play at home this weekend when Potsdam takes on Buffalo State Friday at 5:30 p.m. and SUNY Fredonia Saturday at 1 p.m.
