Gettysburg Downs F&M in Centennial Opener

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Junior Emma Dorshimer(Jenkintown, Pa./Jenkintown) poured in a game-high 21 points and senior Emily Gibbons (Annapolis, Md./Severn School) ripped down 18 rebounds to lead Gettysburg College past Franklin & Marshall College 71-58 in Centennial Conference women's basketball action inside Bream Gym Tuesday night.
 
Gettysburg (3-0, 1-0 CC) received a well-balanced effort from its lineup. Dorshimer paved the way with her first 20-point performance of the season, finishing 7-of-18 from the field and 5-of-7 from the free throw line. Sophomore Kiera Cesareo (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) chipped in with 13 points off the bench and senior Kendra Meredith (Boyds, Md./Northwest) tallied 10 points and three steals.
 
After putting up double-doubles in her first two games of the year, Gibbons fell two points shy on Tuesday. She made up for it on the glass with 15 of her boards coming on the defensive end and she grabbed three steals. Sophomore Emma Hahner (Forest Hill, Md./C. Milton Wright) and freshman Meredith Brown (Landisburg, Pa./West Perry) each contributed six points.
 
Franklin & Marshall (2-1, 0-1 CC) was led by Kristin Hamill with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Haley Pilone added 16 points and Erica Brown recorded eight points and seven caroms.
 
The Diplomats only led once after scoring the opening point. The Bullets turned in the next six, including a reverse lay-up by Gibbons following an offensive rebound. After Franklin & Marshall tied it 12-12, Cesareo knocked down a three-pointer from the corner and a jumper to give the hosts a 17-12 lead after one quarter.
 
Gettysburg grew its advantage in the second period as the team knocked down four three-pointers. The last trey of the frame by Cesareo pushed the margin to 13 (33-20) and the scored stood at 41-27 heading into the locker room.
 
A lay-up by Dorshimer boosted the advantage to a game-high 19 (50-31) with 3:58 remaining in the third quarter. The lead did not dip below 11 for the rest of the contest.
 
Gettysburg canned 26-of-60 (43.3 percent) field goal tries and hit 13-of-16 (81.3 percent) free throws. Franklin & Marshall finished 24-of-67 (35.8 percent) from the floor. The Bullets held a 43-38 rebounding advantage and a 24-9 lead in bench points.
 
The Orange and Blue return to the court next Tuesday, Nov. 28, at Johns Hopkins University 7 p.m.
