The Hope College women's basketball team passed its first road test of the 2017-18 season on Tuesday with a 69-61 nonleague win at Concordia, Wisconsin.

The freshmen backcourt of Lauren Newman and Kenedy Schoonveld led the 13th-ranked Flying Dutch by combining for 33 points against an opponent picked to win the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference.

Hope heads into a Thanksgiving break with a 3-0 overall record. The Flying Dutch's next game is Wednesday, November 29 at home against Olivet College in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association opener.

Head coach Brian Morehouse was proud of how his team applied lessons from a disappointing trip to Saginaw Valley State University a few weeks ago.

"We didn't play very well. We didn't handle adversity well. We didn't handle being on a bus well," Morehouse said, referring to the scrimmage with an NCAA Division II opponent. You don't get ready during warmups for a college basketball road game. You get ready on the bus," Morehouse said. "You get your mind right, so the second you walk off that bus and you're walking toward that gym, you're mentally prepared to be focused defensively and locked in on the offense.

"Our freshmen really learned a lot from that trip. We did a better job on this trip. It was 15 kids coming together. It was a team win."

Newman, pictured, scored 17 of her team-high 19 points in the second half as Hope outscored Concordia (0-1) by a 36-31 margin after halftime.

The guard from Flushing, Michigan (Flushing HS) also dished out three assists and grabbed three rebounds during the game.

Schoonveld scored seven points in each half to finish with 14. The guard from Zeeland, Michigan (Holland Christian) also made three steals, blocked two shots and pulled down two rebounds.

Junior forward Francesca Buchanan of Grant, Michigan (Sparta HS) chipped in eight points and a team-high five rebounds.

Senior guard Madison Geers of Scottville, Michigan (Mason County Central) collected six points, four assists, and three steals.
