UR Stays Hot! Yellowjackets Roll Past William Smith, 76-53

GENEVA, N.Y. – With six women scoring six or more points, Rochester rolled to its third straight victory, this one a 76-53 win over William Smith College at Bristol Gymnasium on Tuesday evening.
 
It was the third game in five nights for Rochester (3-0), the third in four nights for William Smith (2-1). Both teams entered the game fresh off tournament championships. Rochester won its own Chuck Resler Invitational; last weekend, defeating Capital University of Ohio and then rallying past then-fifth-ranked Thomas More College of Kentucky. William Smith won the NYU Tipoff Classic in New York City, beating Johnson & Wales College and then topping host NYU in the final.
 
The Yellowjackets took charge pretty quickly, building an 18-10 lead after one period, then stretching it to as much as 13 in the second half (36-23 after two free throws by Alexandra Leslie). It was 36-26 at intermission.
 
UR opened the third quarter on an 11-4 run to take a 47-30 lead. Lizzy Atkinson drained a three-pointer. Lena Ethington scored on a putback, Lauren Deming hit from just outside the lane, then scored on a fast break, and Leslie knocked down two free throws.
 
William Smith assembled an 8-0 run in less than two minutes as the Herons ran. Kendra Quinn-Moultrie finished the burst with back to back layups, drawing WSC within 47-38 with 4:35 left in the third.

Leslie put an end to that. She scored on a conventional three-point play to start an 11-2 rip for a 58-40 lead as the third period ended. Brenna James sank a trey, Gillian Mairmade one free throw, then later stole the ball for a layup, and Jillian Silvestri hit a hook shot off the right baseline.
 
Rochester's scoring leader was Leslie with 24 points, including an 8- 10 performance from the floor and 8-8 at the line. Deming scored 10 points. Ethington had eight, Mair seven, Atkinson and James six each (they both made two three-pointers). Leslie had five assists and Deming provided four. Braynn Lauer had four steals in 22 minutes.
 
Quinn-Moultrie and Natalia Baum led William Smith with 11 points each. Stavriana Dmitrakopoulou had 10 points. Quinn-Moultrie had seven rebounds. Baum had three steals.
 
The Yellowjackets scored 28 points off 19 WSC turnovers. UR grabbed 11 offensive rebounds and turned those into 16 second-chance points. William Smith had 13 points after 20 Rochester turnovers and produce five second-chance points from 14 offensive boards.
 
Rochester entered the game ranked #11 in the poll conducted by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (up from #24). The Yellowjackets are #21 in the D3hoops.com poll.
