Cortland Nipped by FDU-Florham, 80-75, on Day 2 of Cortaca Classic

ITHACA, N.Y. - Kendrea Williams scored 38 points, including seven 3-pointers, as FDU-Florham edged Cortland, 80-75, during the second day of competition at the Cortaca Classic women's basketball tournament.

Ithaca hosted Saturday's contests after the opening night was held at Cortland. Ithaca finished 2-0 at the tournament with a 66-56 win over Montclair State in Saturday's second game. For the second straight day, Cortland (0-2) faced an opponent that advanced to the NCAA tournament second round. The Devils finished 25-4 a year ago and won their fifth straight MAC Freedom title.

Kerry McHugh (Highland Mills/Monroe-Woodbury) and Kristy Vitucci (Deer Park) led Cortland with 14 points each. McHugh was 5-of-7 from the floor, including two 3-pointers,and Vitucci was 4-of-6 overall with two treys. Shana Crespo (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) added career highs of 12 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals, and Taylor Miller (Freeport) totaled 11 points.

Justine Crespo (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) led the Red Dragons with a career-best 13 rebounds and Shelby Dugan (Watervliet) recorded seven assists and seven rebounds in her second game as a Red Dragon. Joka Oyefeso (Staten Island/Port Richmond) scored a career-high seven points on 3-of-5 shooting.

Williams finished 11-of-24 overall from the field and 7-of-20 from the 3-point arc for the Devils (2-1). She scored 25 of her 38 points in the first half. Gabrielle Harris tallied 19 points, 13 in the second half. Williams, Harris and Raven Dowling shared the team lead with six rebounds, and Dowling also paced FDU with five assists and four steals.

Cortland came out on fire, making all four of its 3-pointers in the first four minutes on the way to a 17-3 lead. The Devils, however, answered with an 11-1 run to close within 18-14 with 1:09 remaining in the quarter. Cortland led by three after the first and never trailed in the second quarter. FDU, however, did tie the score at 39-39 on Kayla Croswell's layup with 1:23 on the clock. Oyefeso's layup with 52 seconds remaining gave the Red Dragons a 41-39 halftime lead. McHugh scored all 14 of her points in the opening 20 minutes.

Neither team led by more than five points in the third quarter. Cortland held its final lead at 60-59 with 1:28 left in the third after a Miller free throw. The Devils scored the last six points, all by Williams, and took a 65-60 lead into the final frame.

Cortland pulled to within three points on three occasions in the fourth, the last at 76-73 when Miller made the first of two free throws with 58 seconds remaining. Shana Crespo stole a long inbounds pass to give the Red Dragons a chance to draw closer, but they missed a layup with 32 seconds left and committed a foul on the rebound.

Bria Smith made the first free throw to extend the FDU lead to four. She missed the second, but she was able to track down her own rebound. Following a timeout, Cortland fouled Williams with 21 seconds left and she sank two foul shots to push the lead to six. Cortland missed two shots on its next trip, Harris made one foul shot at the 12-second mark, and Shana Crespo closed the scoring for the Red Dragons with a layup in the final seconds.

Cortland will be off for 10 days before traveling back to Ithaca on Tuesday, Nov. 28, to face the host bombers at 6 p.m.
