WESTMINSTER, Md. -- Behind the first career double-double from senior Jasmine Bonivel, the fourth-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team won, 71-61, over host McDaniel College to capture the 2017 McDaniel Tip-Off Tournament title on Saturday evening in front of nearly 400 fans at the Gill Center. Bonivel scored 13 points and added a career-high 11 rebounds to lead the Captains (3-0) off the bench. 

Following her standout performance, Bonivel was named to the All-Tournament Team, alongside teammate Bailey Dufrene. Dufrene averaged 9.5 points per game in the tournament while grabbing seven rebounds, four steals, and a pair of assists. 

The Captains used a dominant second quarter to build a big lead on the Green Terror and held off a strong second-half push to capture the victory. CNU outscored McDaniel, 25-11, in the second stanza, led by 20 points off the bench. 

After Liv Storer knocked down the first jumper of the second quarter to put McDaniel ahead, 18-17, CNU surged ahead on an 8-0 run. After McDaniel countered to get back within one, 24-23, with 7:35 remaining, the Captains put on an impressive showing heading into the intermission, outscoring the Green Terror 18-4. Bonivel scored eight points in the spurt, while sophomore Kiana Kirkland scored seven and rookie Jasmine Norman added a three-pointer. 

Carrying a 42-27 edge into the locker room, the Captains had momentum, but the home team answered in the third and start of the fourth quarters with a strong performance to cut the lead all the way down to three at 48-45. Makenzie Fancher drilled a three-pointer to kickstart another big run for the Captains, though, as CNU went on a 12-0 roll to re-take a 15-point lead, 60-45, with 6:19 to go. Dufrene had five points with a layup and a triple, while Bonivel and Norman each added two more buckets to their day in the spurt. 

From there, CNU managed to hold onto a double-digit lead until the final minute of play. Zhara Tannor hit a pair of free throws in the last 30 seconds to finish out the 71-61 win over upset-minded McDaniel. The Captains struggled from the field, shooting just 31.6% (24-76) while the Green Terror knocked down nearly 40% (21-53). CNU forced 25 turnovers with 12 steals, and saw three players finish in double figures. Bonivel's double-double led the way, while Sam Porter filled the stat sheet with 12 points, 6 rebounds, 3 steals, a block and an assist. Norman rounded out the three double-figure scorers with her first career 10-point performance, while adding seven rebounds. 

Fancher had a strong day facilitating, dishing out seven assists to go with her eight points. Dufrene added eight and Kirkland poured in seven points for CNU. 

Storer had a game-high 25 points on 7-10 shooting for McDaniel, while adding seven rebounds. Halle Burgess also had 12 points and five rebounds while Caroline Ward came off the bench to add 10. 

CNU will stay on the road for its next game, traveling to Methodist University on Tuesday, November 21. Tip is set for 6:00 pm in Fayetteville, N.C.
