Lady Royals Roll To 78-43 Victory At Wilkes

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The University of Scranton women's basketball team used stifling defense and an impressive performance at the free throw line to cruise to a 78-43 win at Wilkes on the second day of the Cross-County Challenge in the Long Center.

The Lady Royals (2-0) held Wilkes (1-2) to just 28 percent (14-for-50) from the field in the victory. On the offense end, Scranton made 21 of 22 free throws (95.5 percent), the fourth-highest single-game free throw percentage (minimum of 15 made) in program history. Eight different players made at least one free throw and none hit more than four.

Senior center Katie Feehery (Media, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) led three players in double figures with 14 points in 14 minutes off the bench. Junior guard Bridgette Mann (Canadensis, Pa./Wallenpaupack) had 13 points, seven rebounds and five assists, and sophomore guard Emily Sheehan (Dunmore, Pa./Dunmore) finished with 11 points and four assists.

The Lady Royals also received eight points from freshman guard Taylor Rodriguez (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills), seven points, four rebounds and two assists from freshman guard Ava Gammo (East Hanover, N.J./Hanover Park) and seven points and six rebounds from freshman forward Chloe Burns (Philadelphia, Pa./Springside Chestnut Hill Academy).

Scranton shot 42.9 percent (24-for-56) from the field, including 9-for-24 (37.5 percent) from 3-point range. The Lady Royals held a commanding 44-30 edge on the glass, and forced 20 turnovers while committing 17.

The women's basketball team will host its home opener on Tuesday, Nov. 21, at 7 p.m. in the Long Center against crosstown rival Marywood.
