Wenham, Mass.--Sophomore guard Jordyn Gauvin (Fall River, MA) narrowly missed a double-double with 15 points and nine rebounds to propel the Rhode Island College women's basketball team to a 47-41 win over Manhattanville in the second round of the Gordon Invitational played at the Bennett Center on Saturday afternoon. The win extends the Anchorwomen's record to 3-0 for the season, marking the first time the team has won their first three contests since the 2009-10 campaign. |

HOW IT HAPPENED • Senior guard Jessa Rubera (Newton, MA) tallied six points and two assists in the win for the Anchormen. • Junior forward Kayleah McGuire (Somers, MA) led the way for Manhattanville with 11 points and four rebounds. • Sophomore guard Kymane Jones (Washingtonville, NY) chipped in with eight points, three rebounds and two assists in the loss for the Valiants. • Both teams struggled offensively in the first quarter with the score knotted at 12-12. • RIC controlled the action in the second quarter and took its largest lead of the first half when a layup from freshman guard Brooke Young (West Warwick, RI) gave the Anchorwomen the 22-14 lead with 1:47 left on the clock. • The Anchorwomen took a 24-16 lead heading into the locker room at halftime. • RIC took its first double-digit lead of the contest when a layup from freshman forward Sierra Stewart (North Providence, RI) put the team up by 11, 34-23, with 2:51 left in the third quarter. The Anchorwomen held a 36-23 advantage after three quarters of play. • Manhattanville chipped away at the lead throughout the fourth quarter and closed the gap to within one point, 42-41, on a jumper by freshman guard Amanda Pemberton (Henderson, NV) with just under four minutes left in the contest. • That would be as close as the Valiants would get, however as RIC used four points from Gauvin down the stretch to hold on for the 47-41 victory. |

BY THE NUMBERS • Manhattanville shot 32.6 percent (15-of-46) from the field, 37.5 percent (3-of-8) from the three-point line and 61.5 percent (8-of-13) from the free throw line. • RIC outrebounded Manhattanville by a 35-31 margin and forced the Valiants into 23 turnovers. |
