FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Senior Emily Gibbons(Annapolis, Md./Severn School) put up 29 points and 22 rebounds to lead Gettysburg College to a 74-65 victory over Lehman College in the season opener at the University of Mary Washington Hyatt Place Tipoff Tournament Friday evening.
Gibbons produced her second career 20-20 effort for Gettysburg (1-0), finishing one point shy of her personal best and tying her career high for rebounds. She finished 12-of-18 from the floor and 5-of-7 from the free throw line. Gibbons posted 19 points and 13 rebounds in the second half alone.
Junior Emma Dorshimer (Jenkintown, Pa./Jenkintown) knocked down five three pointers and finished with 17 points and seven rebounds for the Bullets.
After a tight first quarter which ended with the score 16-16, Gettysburg seized the upper-hand with an 8-0 run to start the second period. The Bullets turned four consecutive turnovers by Lehman (1-1) into points with an offensive rebound and putback by Gibbons making it 24-16 with 7:56 to go before the half.
The Lighting remained within striking distance, slicing the deficit back down to one before settling for a five-point margin at 35-30 heading into the break.
Gettysburg opened things up in the third quarter. After a lay-up by Selena Lopez pulled Lehman within four (45-41), the Bullets went on a 13-1 run over the next three minutes. Dorshimer fueled the effort with a pair of three-pointers and a lay-up by Gibbons made it 58-42 with 2:27 to go in the frame.
The Lightning answered with the final eight points of the third quarter to cut the deficit in half. After trailing by double-figures in the early minutes of the fourth quarter, Lehman whittled the margin down to five on three occasions, including at 68-63 with 4:12 to play. A three-pointer by Dorshimer stole momentum and the Bullets polished the win off with three free throws in the final 55 seconds of play.
Both teams turned in similar shooting efforts with Gettysburg finishing 28-of-69 (40.6 percent) and Lehman finishing 27-of-66 (40.9 percent). The Bullets knocked down eight three-pointers and out-scored the Lightning 18-2 in second-chance points.
Freshman Meredith Brown (Landisburg, Pa./West Perry) came off the bench for eight points and four rebounds, while sophomores Tyler Keohan (Acton, Mass./Acton Boxborough Regional) and Emma Hahner (Forest Hill, Md./C. Milton Wright) each scored six points.
Ayanna Behagen led Lehman with 14 points. Lynda Fields and LiliBeth Garcia scored 13 and 12 points, respectively, while Alliyah Dorsett grabbed 14 rebounds.
Gettysburg will take on Virginia Wesleyan University (1-1) in the championship game Saturday at 2 p.m. Virginia Wesleyan defeated No. 24 Mary Washington 58-53.
