No. 5 Saints Open Season With a 70-52 Win Over Calvin

(ROCHESTER, N.Y.) – The fifth-ranked Thomas More College women's basketball team opened the 2017-18 season today (Friday, November 17, 2017) with a 70-52 win over Calvin College in the first game of the University of Rochester Chuck Resler Tournament at the Louis Alexander Palestra in Rochester, New York.

With the win, the Saints are 1-0 and with the loss, the Knights fall to 0-2.

Calvin jumped out to a 10-7 lead with 2:52 to play in the opening quarter when Rachel Warners made a lay-up.  The Saints closed the opening quarter on an 8-3 run to take a 15-13 lead after one quarter when first-year guard Briana McNutt (Maysville, Ky./Mason County) converted an old fashion three-point play with 36-seconds to play in the quarter.

Thomas More opened the second quarter on a 10-4 run capped by a lay-up senior Nikki Kiernan (Cold Spring, Ky./Newport Central Catholic) with 5:43 to play in the quarter to extend the lead to 25-17.  The Knights answered with a 10-2 run to tie the game at 27-27 when Ashton Bowersock made a lay-up with 50-seconds to play in the quarter.  Thomas More took a 29-27 lead at halftime when sophomore forward Emily Schultz (Mebourne, Ky./Bishop Brossart) made a lay-up with 20-seconds to play in the second quarter.

The Saints used a 19-9 run at the start of the third quarter to build a 48-36 lead with 1:59 to play in the quarter when Schultz made a lay-up.  Calvin had a three-pointer in the closing minute of the quarter to cut the Saints' lead to 48-40 after three quarters.

Thomas More out-scored Calvin 22-12 in the fourth quarter to cruise to the 70-52 victory.

The Saints out-scored Calvin 40-14 in the paint, 12-2 in second chance points and the Saints' bench had a 33-8 advantage on the Knights' bench.

Junior guard Madison Temple (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson) recorded a double-double as she scored 14 points and pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds.  Joining her in double-figure scoring was Kiernan and Schultz with 12 points each.  Temple also led the team in assists with five and steals with three.  Junior forward Shelby Rupp (Milan, Ind./Batesville) led the team in blocks with three.

Thomas More will play either host and 21s-ranked Rochester or Capital University tomorrow at 6 p.m. in the championship game of the Chuck Resler Tournament in Rochester, New York.
