ADRIAN, Mich. — Marietta College dominated the paint in an impressive 84-60 season-opening win at Adrian College Wednesday (Nov. 15) evening.

"I am really proud of our effort and intensity to open the season," Marietta head coach Kole Vivian said. "We were focusing on rebounding and taking away their drives all week, and for the majority of the game, we did that. We did a great job of moving the ball on offense and our bench gave us a ton of energy throughout the game. I couldn't be more happy coming back to Marietta starting off the season 1-0."

Marietta's inside game was too much for the Bulldogs. The Pioneers outscored Adrian 44-10 in the paint. MC completely dominated the glass on both ends of the floor finishing with 19 more rebounds than Adrian.

Three of Marietta's frontcourt players scored double figures. Corrie Burkhardt and Jenna Andersen both finished with 11 points and five rebounds, while Alexis Enochs scored 12 points and grabbed a team-high six rebounds off the bench.

Senior point guard Amisha Herd led the Pioneers with 13 points. She also dished out four assists and had four steals.

The Bulldogs led briefly, 7-5, early in the first quarter. Emily Somerville hit a three-pointer with 7:41 left in the opening period, but that would be Adrian's final points of the quarter. Marietta scored 15 straight points and ended the period with a 20-7 lead.

Marietta extended its lead to 18 points, 39-21, at halftime. The Pioneers continued to pull away and had a 28-point advantage, 63-35, heading into the fourth quarter.

Any hopes of a comeback for the Bulldogs were dashed early in the fourth quarter. A layup from Andersen with 8:35 left in the game gave the Pioneers their biggest lead of the night, 67-35.

The big lead allowed Marietta to clear its bench. The Pioneers play 16 different players, 12 of which got in the scoring column.

Ashley Morris led the Bulldogs with 15 points. Angelina Goosby added 10 points and five rebounds, while Alyssa Kubik chipped in with eight points and pulled down a game-high seven rebounds.

For the game, Marietta shot 47.8% (33-of-69) from the floor, 22.7% (5-of-22) from three-point range and 68.4% (13-of-19) at the free throw line. Adrian was 20-of-54 (37.0%) from the floor, 6-of-16 (37.5%) behind the arc and 14-of-18 (77.8%) at the line.

The Pioneers host Transylvania University on Sunday (Nov. 19) in their home opener. Tipoff in Ban Johnson Arena is set for 2 p.m.
