GENEVA, N.Y.—William Smith College Head Basketball Coach Lindsay Sharman announced that Ann Dorris will join her coaching staff for the 2017-18 season. Dorris comes to the Finger Lakes following three successful seasons as an assistant coach at her alma mater, Lynchburg College.
 
"Ann's passion for teaching, her experiences as a Division III student-athlete, and her strong abilities as a motivator, combined with her liberal arts background, make her a great fit for HWS and the Heron basketball program," Sharman said. "Her holistic approach to coaching aligns strongly with our Peak Performance program, and I'm confident she'll be a great mentor for our student-athletes."
 
Over the past three seasons, Dorris has helped the Hornets post a 66-21 overall record, including a 40-8 mark in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. Lynchburg finished first in the ODAC regular season standings in each of the past two seasons and captured the 2016 ODAC Tournament Championship. The Hornets made their first NCAA tournament appearance in 2016 and earned the program's first NCAA tournament win in 2017, topping Catholic 69-64. Dorris has coached eight All-ODAC players, three 1,000-point scorers, and two All-South players.
 
Dorris assisted with player skill development, implementation of game strategy, scouting, recruiting, and team travel.
 
As an undergraduate, Dorris transferred to Lynchburg from Hardin-Simmons University. She played point guard for the Hornets, appearing in 52 career games, scoring 209 points and dishing out 110 assists. A team captain as a senior, Dorris helped Lynchburg to a 34-21 record during her two seasons, advancing to the ODAC semifinals in 2013 and 2014. She was named to the ODAC Sportsmanship Team following the 2013-14 season.
 
Dorris graduated from Lynchburg with a bachelor's degree in English literature in 2014. Two years later, she earned a master's degree in English from the Virginia college.
 
William Smith will welcome back 11 players, including seven with at least one start, from last season's 17-9 team. The Herons finished second in the Liberty League standings with an 11-5 record. William Smith will begin the 2017-18 campaign with a trip to the Big Apple to compete in the NYU Tip-Off Classic, Nov. 18-19.
