RIC Wraps Up Regular Season With, 82-60, Loss at Keene State

Keene, N.H.-The Rhode Island College women's basketball team wrapped up the 2016-17 regular season with an 82-60 setback vs. Keene State at Spaulding Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.

 

Junior guard Jessa Rubera (Newton, MA) led the way for RIC (5-20, 2-12 LEC) with 18 points, three rebounds and two assists. Freshman guard Jordyn Gauvin (Fall River, MA) tallied 11 points and a team-best six rebounds, while sophomore forward Molly Phillips (Cranston, RI) notched 11 points.

 

Junior guard Sandi Purcell (Hudson, NH) paced Keene State (18-7, 11-3 LEC) with a game-high 30 points, four rebounds and two assists. Sophomore guard Emily McPadden (Tyngsborough, MA) notched 18 points. Senior guard Stephanie D'Annolfo (Tyngsborough, MA) had 13 points and seven boards in the win for the Owls.

 

The two teams traded leads throughout the first quarter before RIC took the 19-16 lead on a layup from Phillips with :39 left on the clock. The Anchorwomen held on to the three point advantage after the first quarter of play.

 

Keene State regained the  lead, 21-19, after a layup by D'Annolfo with 7:31 left in the first half. The Owls would never relinquish the lead, going up by as many as 15 points in the half before taking a 36-26 lead heading into the locker room at halftime. 

 

Keene State pushed the lead to 60-29 on a basket by senior forward Amanda Petrow (Methuen, MA) with just over four minutes left in the third quarter. The Owls then cruised to the 82-60 victory.

 

RIC shot 38.9 percent (21-of-54) from the field, 12.5 percent (2-of-16) from behind the three-point stripe and 72.7 percent (16-of-22) from the free throw line. Keene State shot 45.0 percent (27-of-60) from the field, 40.6 percent (13-of-32) from the three-point line and 65.2 percent (15-of-23) from the free throw line.

 

 In upcoming action, eighth-seeded Rhode Island College will travel to top-seeded Eastern Connecticut for first round action of the 2017 Little East Conference Tournament on Tuesday, Feb. 21 (TBA).
