Trine Win Sets Up Title Chance at Hope

ALMA, Mich.—The No. 22 Trine women's basketball team won its seventh-straight game on Wednesday night when it flew past Alma on the road, 87-42.

The Thunder improves to 21-2 overall and is 14-1 against the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association. The Scots fell to 8-16 overall and 6-9 in conference action.

Hayley Martin (Auburn, Ind./DeKalb) led the Thunder with 19 points, six rebounds and four blocks. Brandi Dawson (Garrett, Ind./Garrett) added 16 points, while Shaely Duff (Greenfield, Ind./Mount Vernon) totaled 11. Ashley Elliott (Scottsburg, Ind./Scottsburg) and Tashayla Sutorius (Fort Wayne, Ind./Wayne) each notched nine points.

Trine shot a scalding 61.8 percent from the floor (34-of-55), the second-best total on record in program history. That included a 53.8 percent (7-of-13) effort from three-point range.

Kaitlyn Kendall paced Alma with 15 points, while Tara Padgett came off the bench to score 10.

The Thunder offence came out fast in the first quarter scoring 14 unanswered points on its way to a 24-10 advantage. Martin notched nine points in the quarter, with Dawson close by with eight points.

Trine scored another 24 points in the second quarter to hold a 30-point advantage heading into halftime. Duff notched nine points in the quarter.

The Thunder continued to outscore the Scots in the third with 23 points to Alma's 11. Martin grabbed six points.

Alma had its highest scoring quarter in the fourth, but the Thunder had a 16-13 advantage. Kayla Freeman (Battle Creek, Mich./Battle Creek Central) led the Thunder with five points.

The Thunder will play its last regular season game on Saturday at No. 8 Hope. A win would give Trine its first MIAA title in program history and home court advantage in the MIAA Tournament. Tipoff is at 12:45 p.m.
