Providence, R.I.--The Rhode Island College women's basketball team suffered a 74-27 setback at nationally-ranked No. 3 Tufts on Monday evening.

 

RIC (5-18) was led by sophomore forward Molly Phillips (Cranston, RI) with 10 points and two rebounds.

 

Junior forward Melissa Baptista (Somerville, MA) paced Tufts (22-1) with 21 points. Senior forward Michaela North (Duxbury, MA) added 15 points and eight rebounds, while sophomore guard Jacqueline Knapp (Westfield, NJ) had 11 points and four boards in the victory for the Jumbos.

 

Tufts controlled the action early and jumped out to a 20-1 advantage after a pair of free throws from junior guard Lauren Dillon (Wellesley, MA). The Jumbos then took the 24-7 lead after the first quarter of play.

 

Tufts continued to build on its lead throughout the second quarter before taking a 41-15 advantage heading into the locker room at halftime.

 

The Jumbos extended their lead to as much as 42 points when a three-pointer by senior forward Katy Hicks (Canton, MA) with 1:53 left in the third quarter made the score 58-16. Tufts held the 58-20 lead after three quarters of play and led by as many as 50 en route to the 74-27 victory.

 

RIC shot 27.7 percent (9-of-35) from the field, 22.2 percent (2-of-9) from behind the three-point stripe and 50.0 percent (7-of-14) from the free throw line. Tufts shot 25.8 percent (27-of-59) from the field, 30.4 percent (7-of-23) from the three-point line and 72.2 percent (13-of-18) from the free throw line.

 

 In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will resume Little East Conference action at Western Connecticut on Wednesday, Feb. 15 (5:30 p.m.).
