ALBION, Mich. – First-year players Mackenzie Fairbanks and Paige Ruesch led Albion College on an 11-0 run midway through the second quarter as the Britons pulled away for a 78-62 victory over Alma College in a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association women's basketball game at Kresge Gymnasium.
Albion led 39-25 by the time Fairbanks was through scoring 10 points in the second quarter. A product of nearby Napoleon High School, Fairbanks scored in double figures for the first time in her collegiate career. She finished the day with 12 points, shooting an efficient 6-of-8 from the field.
While Fairbanks grabbed the lead, the day belonged to seniors Oreyana Curry, Olivia Savage and Emily Zgoda who played their final home game. Savage produced 12 points and five assists, Curry hit a 3-point shot with a minute left to become the ninth player in Albion history to reach the 1,000-point milestone and Zgoda chipped in with nine points.
"It was a good team effort," Head Coach Doreen Carden said after Albion improved to 17-6 overall and 10-4 against MIAA rivals. "It was good to have the seniors go out with a win in their last home game."
First-year forward Emily Bernas led Albion's starters with 12 points.
Alma's Kaitlyn Kendall led all players with 14 points, but none of her teammates reached double figures.
Albion will travel to Calvin College and Kalamazoo College to complete the regular season. The winner of the Wednesday game in Grand Rapids will likely have the inside track for the No. 3 seed in the MIAA Tournament.
"I hope this gets us going," Carden said. We have one week left in the regular season. We have to stay fresh and make sure we're healthy.
"The biggest thing is moving and taking pride in our press," she added. "Our kids did a good job of forcing 25 turnovers."
