MILWAUKEE -- Alverno College missed 14 free throws in an 83-74 loss to visiting Lakeland University in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play Saturday night inside Reiman Gymnasium.

The host Inferno was just 12-for-26 at the line while the Muskies made 10 of their 13 trips to the stripe.

A Katelyn Bartlett layup with 3:40 left to play cut the Lakeland lead to two points, but the Muskies used a 7-0 run over the next 2:40 to put the game out of the Inferno's reach. Lakeland made 6-of-8 free throws in the final minute to seal the win.

Alverno led 8-2 to open the game and 21-20 with 31 seconds left in the first quarter, but the host team was unable to pull in front again. The Muskies led by four at halftime and by one at the end of the third quarter.

Five Inferno players reached double figures led by Karli Selear's career-high 18 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the field. Mackenzie Mathies scored 13 with three triples, Tessa Mersberger also made three from downtown for 11 points, while Gabby Hood had 11 and Bartlett added 10.

Selear also posted a career-high in the assists column with eight and snagged four steals on the defensive end while Bartlett, Hood and Mersberger tied for team-high honors with nine rebounds apiece.

Rachel Stankevich led Lakeland (16-7, 14-4 NACC) with 22 points, 13 rebounds and was two assists shy of a triple-double with eight. Bailey Grayvold added 18 points for the Muskies who won their third straight game.

Alverno (10-13, 10-8) needs a win (or a Milwaukee School of Engineering loss) in one of the final two games to secure a spot in the NACC Tournament. Next up is a road game at Benedictine University Wednesday night at 7.
