NJCU Struggles to Score in Loss to Kean

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | Freshman guard Iyannah Moore (Newark, N.J./University) led NJCU with 11 points but New Jersey City University was limited to seven points in the first quarter and its lowest scoring effort of the season in a 69-35 New Jersey Athletic Conference loss to second place Kean University on February 1 inside the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center ("Charlie Brown Court").
 
NJCU (4-17, 0-14 NJAC, Lost 9) scored a season-low 35 points as Kean (14-7, 11-3 NJAC) prevented the Gothic Knights from scoring more than 11 points in any quarter. NJCU shot 19.7 percent in the loss (12-61). Kean forced 24 turnovers and translated that into a 34-11 margin in points off giveaways. Kean also outscored NJCU in the paint, 36-12, and owned an 18-0 differential on the fast break.
 
The Gothic Knights' first field goal of the game came with 3:18 left in the first quarter and they could not recover after being outscored 20-7 in the opening 10 minutes. Kean led 39-17 at halftime.
 
Moore scored 11 on 5-of-14 shooting with seven rebounds and three assists in 35 minutes. Junior center Shege Haxhaj (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst) grabbed all 16 of her rebounds in the first three periods of play and scored seven points with two blocks in 29 minutes of action. Senior guard Kiana Briggs (Paterson, N.J./Passaic County Tech) scored double digits in a game for the 10th time this season as she chalked up 10 points.
 
Kean scored a game-high 20 points in the first quarter on 47.4 shooting (9-19) as it took command of the game early on. The Cougars started the game with by scoring the first 11 points in the first six minutes. Freshman De'Mean Bond (Paterson, N.J.), a four-time NJAC Rookie of the Week, registered a double-double with 12 rebounds and 13 points (6-11 FG) in only 21 minutes of action. Last year's Rookie of the year, sophomore guard Marajiah Bacon (Neptune, N.J.) scored a game-high 16 points (7-14 FG) in 21 minutes.
 
In all, 13 Kean players logged at least seven minutes and 10 of them scored at least two points. Its bench contributed 23 points in Wednesday's victory. Senior guard Jaquetta Owens (Bloomfield, N.J.) had nine points (4-8 FG) and six assists while junior forward Kenya Adams (Perth Amboy, N.J.) provided five assists.
 
OF NOTE:

  • 64th meeting. Kean leads all-time series, 52-12 (Streak: Won last 6 games)
  • Briggs scored double digits in a game for the 10th time this season and fifth time in the last six games. She has scored in double figures 39 times in 91 career games and has scored 754 points.
  • Haxhaj's 16 rebounds are her second most this season. It was her seventh double digit rebounding effort in the last eight games and her eighth of the season and her career.
  • Moore scored double digits against an opponent for the fourth time this season.

NJCU travels to Rowan University (13-8, 7-7 NJAC) on Saturday, February 4 with the NJAC game scheduled for 5:00 p.m. in Glassboro, N.J. at Esby Gymnasium. Rowan leads the all-time series, 45-12 and has won the last five meetings including its 91-53 win over NJCU in Jersey City on January 9. Rowan is in a three-way tie with Rutgers-Camden and TCNJ for fifth place in the league.
