Tigers Edged By Poets

LOS ANGELES — Triana Anderson scored 13 points, and Erin Matsumoto and Shariah Green each added 12.

But the Occidental women's basketball team was on the wrong side of another crushing defeat, falling to Whittier 59-56 at Rush Gymnasium on Saturday.

Emily Leonard gave Oxy a boost with eight points off of the bench and Tala Ismail scored seven and dished out five assists.

Oxy was cold from the outside, going just 3 for 17 from the three-point line, and shot just 38 percent overall on the game.

Emilee Dy led Whittier with 18 points off of the bench and Anna Youngblood scored 16.

Anderson put Oxy up one with 42 seconds left, finishing an offensive rebound with a short jumper, but Youngblood countered with a basket at the other end.

Oxy turned the ball over on its next possession and after fouling to extend the game, couldn't hit a desperation three at the buzzer to send the game into overtime.

Season Impact: The Tigers have lost back-to-back games by a total of four points, falling to 10-9 overall and 6-4 in SCIAC play. Oxy lost a back-and-forth game to the Bulldogs 65-64 in its last time out.

Whittier improves to 6-13 and 5-5.

Next Game: The Tigers host La Verne on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Rush Gym.
