With an impressive performance, Sewanee hands BSC its first conference loss

SEWANEE, Tenn. (Jan. 29, 2017)  Through the first eight games of the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) schedule, Birmingham-Southern did not lose. That all ended Sunday, as the Sewanee women's basketball team defeated the Panthers 62-45 inside Juhan Gymnasium. 

It was a complete effort for the Tigers, as Sewanee limited BSC to a 29.6 field goal percentage while making 41.7 percent of its three-point shots.

With that, Sewanee led from the 7:51 mark in the first quarter through the rest of the game. In fact, after holding a two-point lead, 18-16, at the end of the first quarter, Sewanee took command the second 10 minutes. The Tigers opened the second on a 13-5 run. Eventually, that lead stretched to eight, 32-24, after senior Savannah Rose hit a free throw.

In the third quarter, Sewanee kept rolling. That Tigers outscored the Panthers 16-7 in the third. The purple and gold were able to race out to a 16-point advantage with 3:50 left in the third after Sue Kim hit a side three. BSC answered with a 6-2 run before Katie Roth hit a three at the buzzer.

In the fourth, Sewanee maintained its lead. In fact, the Tigers built their largest lead of the game with 4:10 left after another three by Kim.

Overall, Bella Taylor led Sewanee with 23 points and six rebounds. She was joined by Hannah McCormack and Rose, who both finished with seven points, while Kim added eight.

Camillia Carter led BSC with 22 points. Additionally, Emilee Olsen added six points and 10  rebounds.

Sewanee returns to action by hosting Berry Friday at 6:00 p.m.
